I've never taken one in my life...

Are we supposed to?

I'm pretty sure I get all the nutrients I need from being healthy and eating well in general, but it would be interesting to get everyone's opinion!

Do you take supplements? If so what?

Cheers!

I take flax oil daily, and a multivitamin when I remember to.

I take flax oil and a multivitamin most days. I sometimes skip the flax on days when I've eaten walnuts. Theoretically, I don't need the multivitamin, because I get all the nutrients I need from my diet (fortified soy milk helps), but I've always taken one, even as an omni, "just in case".

Its best if you can get the nutrients from eating the right foods. I try to do this, but because I'm not great at it I do take a few supplents. i take a supplement of calcium, magnesium and zinc, a supplement of omega 3,6 & 9, and i take a multi-vitamin. All of them are vegan.

i take oils, but i consider them foods not supplements. i use Udo's perfect DHA blend, coconut oil, olive oil, occassionally flax seed oil. i do not take any other vitamins, though were i vegan, i would take a sublingual b12 tablet.

i, personally, am not bothered by gelatin in medication, but some people are, so make your own decision about those.

I take vegan DHA and because I am nursing a prenatal multi. When ds is weaned I will stop taking the multi and just take the DHA and some B-12. Those are the only nutrients even the best vegan diet cannot provide.

I take a multi and a sublingual B-12 tablet a few times a week.

I try to use flax seeds too, but I've been a little lax about that lately.

I'm not sure about 'supposed to', but I think it's generally recommended that everyone take supplements (as in a multivitamin), regardless of diet.

On the other hand, I've read stuff indicating that most of the multivitamin is passed through the body.

I didn't take supplements for about 3 years after becoming vegan, then I decided to buy some multivitamins. I take one about once a week. I figure if I'm not getting something from my diet it might help. Although, if I'm not getting something necessary from my diet, I think I should change my diet rather than rely on supplements.

I do use flax oil and stuff like that, but I consider it part of my diet and not some kind of supplement. For example I put flax oil and balsamic vinegar in a dish (just a little of each) and dip pita bread into it it.

If you are lacto-ovo, you will not need a supplement, any more than you would on an omnivore diet.

If vegan, you should give some attention to B12 and perhaps omega-3s.

I try. When I think about it. They're kind of expensive and I don't really feel the benefits so it's easy enough to forget about them.

I agree with Seusomon. I don't know that vegetarians need to take supplements any more than anyone else. If you're eating a varied diet your diet can be just as healthy/unhealthy as anyone else's.

Vegetarians have the same life span as meat eaters. They believe this is do to a shortage of B-12 and omega-3. Also if you do not get enough sunlight, you could have a shortage of vitamin D. See site below for more on this.

Nutritional Concerns for Vegetarians
