I hardly ever post at this site anymore. And if I do it's in the vegetarian kids/parenting thread. But, I need to get this off my chest.

We have shared our home with our beloved cat for 3 years. He came to us via a neglectful owner. He is about 9 years old. He is the BEST cat I've ever known. He does his own thing. He is patient and kind to my 3 yo son. He sits on my lap w/ the rabbit every night. He uses his ltter box diligently and is a good patient when ill. He suffered kidney stones three weeks ago but pulled thru and slipped a disk just about 1 1/2 weeks ago. He received a steroid shot and was healing nicely (although walking a bit off).

On Saturday evening my dh had the door propped open to our house while carrying stuff from upstairs downstairs. The Beato (cat's name) was enjoying a spot of son the deck. he's an inside cat w/ no front claws. But, he often sits on the deck w/ us. I fell asleep w/ ds during his nap. Two hours later my dh was done working and we realized the cat had vanished. Gone. We scoured the area for hours until it was too dark to see. I awoke at 4:30 am the next day and did my best crime scene investigation of the surrounding three miles of rural land from about 5am until noon. And we sat and cried and waited the rest of the day. He never showed. I looked EVERYWHERE. I've made a little make-shift tent on the deck w/ his kitty bed and food/water in it. And I'm so sad. I feel very much to blame for his being lost. I let his "normal" behavior dictate my lax decision to let him sit in the sun. But, he's injured! Why didn't I pay closer attention? ack! My mind has been so full of thoughts of him freezing and hungry and languishing in the woods. Or torn to shreds by a coyote. Or ANYTHING!

Anyway, to my coworkers... "it's just a cat". Even my dh isn't too riveted by his disappearance. My ds is only 3... and I don't want to worry him too much. I'm alone in missing my dear fur-friend. I just wanted to share my grief a bit. Maybe remind everyone to hug their cats more often and KEEP 'EM INSIDE!

Thanks for listening.

Wow, I'm so sorry for you...that's absolutely horrible! I know how you feel as I have had two of my cats 'disappear' over the past few years, not knowing what became of them. I still have four cats, two of which still go outside because that is how they were raised. I dread it when they are outside and don't relax until I get them to come in. Any future kitties that I get will certainly be indoor cats. I hope you find the Beato....it's not too late for him to still come home.

I hope your cat comes home. When my cat went missing I googled all kinds of things to help get them home, it at least made me feel like I was doing something productive about the situation.

i am soo sorry to hear about your cat. of course he's more than "just a cat". i have had cats vanish into the wilds, but i also had a neighbor whose cat returned after a long absence. Thin, pregnant, but pretty much okay. I hope it all turns out for you.

I'm so sorry about your cat, but don't lose hope. A couple of years ago my brothers mouse somehow got out of his cage (that was outside) and disappeared and we thought he had surely died or been eaten but a few months later we let our cat inside (he's an indoor/outdoor cat), and he dropped a mouse in our entryway that was alive! The mouse ran into a closet but when we found him and picked him up we realized he was my brothers missing mouse. He somehow survived months outside on his own and we couldn't even believe that our cat would bring him back to us unharmed. (And he is a hunting cat too.)

I hope your cat is okay and comes home safely. If a mouse can survive that long then I'm sure your cat can too. He'll be in my thoughts.

He's probably exploring and curious, since hes an inside cat. He knows where home is though, I think he will return eventually.

go and LOOK! often, indoor cats are close by and hiding. they won't come if you call, or make noise, so you have to check under sheds, etc, in small places where they like to hide. also, he might be in a neighbors garage somewhere... and can't get out. go LOOK!

you make it sound like he's gone forever. cats will take off sometimes for days at a time and come home when they're hungry. keep putting fresh food and water out, keep a porchlight on, and as mentioned, keep checking in small spaces. under cars, steps, sheds, bushes, anywhere he could be hiding. outside cats will roam. inside cats normally are nervous about surroundings they're not used to and won't stray too far from home. they'll usually just hide until they're found or until they get hungry and have to go look for food. call your neighbours and ask them to keep an eye out, tell them to check sheds and porches etc as well. give a good description and his name and your phone number so if they find him they can call you to go pick him up. if there's a general store or something in your neighbourhood ask to put up a poster in their window. put a photo of him on it if you have one, preferably in colour, a description, name, and your contact info

don't just give up and say oh well he's gone. it hasn't been very long he's probably not too far away and is waiting for you to go bring him home

I agree with purrpelle. My cat Cookie Dough took off when I had the back door opened. I thought she was gone forever. Cookie was a skinny little gray tabby so I thought she would be eaten by big dogs and/or hurt in cat fights. Two days later, I was in the yard gardening and heard a soft cat cry. I looked up and Cookie was rubbing her head against the deck post. I grabbed her and held her in my arms and rushed her inside. She was starving but otherwise, fine. She smelled of dirt. I think all this time, she was just watching me panic and calling out her name day and night for two days - hiding behind a bush or the shed.

Your cat may still come home.

Edamommy, has your cat shown up?

Back in 1993, I was outside with my cat and she got in a scuffle with my neighbor's cat. I went over to break it up, and she ran around the house; I went after her and couldn't find her. After about an hour or two of going around calling her, I heard a barely-audible "meow" from under the front steps- they're sort of a 5-step, one-piece, cast concrete affair that's hollow underneath, but the only way to get under them is through a smallish hole under one side. That's where she had been sulking.
