Once I returned a bag of frozen hash browns because I realized they had lard (WTF) just after getting home with them (only a few minutes to the store and back), but afterwards I realized they probably couldn't resell them. I felt pretty bad. I wouldn't do something like that again - I just read labels more carefully now.
When I was working in a grocery store, they would just throw returned food out. They also throw out perishables that you decide you don't want and just hand to the checker (this could be different at other stores). FYI.

OP: It is definitely up to you. I agree with what others have said. There is always a friend who will take opened food products from you, but I don't see anything wrong with you eating it.

My brain says honey is not that big of a deal, but I've done the same thing and couldn't eat it, simply because the honey made me lose interest. I don't think eating already-bought slightly non-vegan cereal would make you a terrible person, but I doubt the world will starve if you throw it out either. Your call, really. Like everyone else said.

I wouldn't eat it - but only because in order to be vegan I need to draw a pretty firm mental line, and I don't want to cross it (ie: by eating something not-vegan intentionally), because I don't want to unsettle my very happy vegan balance!

That said, I agree it's probally the best thing to do and don't have a moral problem with it.

It's not that big a deal, Adam. Like we've talked about, we all make mistakes sometimes. You can eat it, or give it a friend. I'd opt for giving it to a friend, 'cos that way it might displace a bit of other food gained through exploitation from their diet, whereas if you eat it it's replacing vegan food in your own diet. We're talking half a box of cereal at this point, though; it's not that big a deal.

I've worked at a grocery store and people return everything after it's open or mostly eaten. Just tell them that you don't like it and want a different kind.
This is also something you can do.
We've returned a partially-eaten chocolate bar. It was one of those Lindt dark chocolate bars... I happened to look at the ingredients list while eating it (it wasn't me that had picked it out at the store), and noticed it. Brought it back, it was no problem.
They'll probably throw it out, as has been said, but at least this way if she store is returning the product, on the computers, it won't count as a sale anymore.

Though personally I'd opt for being honest about why you're bringing it back. Why make something up? I'd say, "I'm against animal exploitation so I don't eat animal products. This has honey in it." or something to that effect.

Scratch my comments about it not being a big deal. Where do I sign?

I agree with most everyone else - it's your call whether to eat it or give it to someone else. I've done that a few times here in Japan, although it's happening less frequently now that I can actually read.
When I bought stuff on accident that had fish stock in it (which is EVERYTHING), I always gave it away. But if I accidentally bought something with a tiny amount of milk, egg, or honey, I've always just eaten it, unless I specifically knew of someone who would want it. That's what I'm ok with mentally. However it's entirely your call, whatever you're comfortable with.

You're condemned to the 7th circle of vegan hell, Adam. You will spend eternity being stung by bees who's honey you have stolen.

For a few seconds, I actually thought you were serious...even with the smiley. Then I was like, "Wait a minute..."
