We went to a field trip in my Chinese class to a chinese market. We brought money to buy whatever we wanted, so I had in my hands some foreign soda, insence, and tea. Im walking to the checkout line, and they have a bunch of live fish that are killed. I asked if I could buy them live and they said OK. With what money I had I bought 2 fish (One an eel, the other I forgot the kind). I first intended to let them go, but I realized that they would probably die out. The fish (not the eel) sadly died on the way back to the school due to a leak. We bought a tank for the eel, and he living happily. My only regret is I have to feed him bloodworms. I brought it in school, and everyone was crowded around me lol. I am proud though I tried to save 2 innocent lives, although I only saved one. I would rather die on a water leak than to be on someone elses plate

Agreed, I know that you had good intentions, but this isn't the way to "rescue" animals.

The fish that died probably died a slow and painful death of asphyxiation rather than a quick death by having its head cut off. If I were the fish, I'd prefer the quick death. I hope you'll do some research into how to properly care for the eel.

Why do I have the feeling that was meant as sarcastic? Everybody makes mistakes, it doesn't mean we should call them out and make them feel horrible.

Actually, it wasn't meant to be sarcastic at all.

My apologies then. For some reason, when I see things written (typed?) in italics, it goes to sarcastic in my brain.

Live 'n learn, ya know?
As terrible as it sounds, saving one or two lives isn't worth supporting the industry itself.
We can't let compassion for one offset the effort to protect many.

Unfortunately what will happen now is the shop will buy another eel and fish to go in their place and be killed. On the other hand I think it is pretty callous to say you should have let them both die when it was in your power to do something (even though one still did die :/). I don't think you did anything WRONG but I agree that you should do some extensive research into how to care for the eel. Perhaps you can also arrange some kind of action to try and convince that place not to sell live animals any more. A demonstration, petition, writing letters? Maybe use some activist energy into motivating people to protest this

Adam, good for you trying to do the right thing. I know this is a complicated one: on the one hand, we should never buy animals, whether it be to keep them as pets or whatever other reason. As has been pointed out, it adds to the demand.

On the other hand, when it's within your reach to end the suffering of a particular individual, it's definitely tempting. I've certainly wondered if I might do the same thing in your shoes, even with the knowledge that it's wrong to support exploitation by purchasing an animal. What if I was walking along and came across a clearly unhappy animal, who I could take away from that misery by shelling out a few bucks? Could I just walk away?
I know it's wrong, but how can you make yourself walk away? So I understand why you felt compelled to act as you did.
