I have had Veganomicon for about 2 months and I havent even made anything from it yet, though I have leafed through it many times. So I am going to make my first Vgnmcn recipe in a few days... someone on here mentioned Snobby Joe a few days ago and I thought that I might try and make that.

They are new to me, an american thing, I am not sure what they are supposed to look like or taste like. It looks sort of like chilli on a bread roll... : ?

Also, it doesnt state in the recipe which sort of lentil to use. I have the brown lentils which are a little bigger than the red, and has its skin intact.

Are they ok to use? If you have made it, what sort of lentil do you use?

No but I am sure that there are other sauces I could buy. Thank you for the explanation, I have a few american cookbooks and I am unfamiliar with a number of the dishes in them... possibly a reason why i havent done many recipes from these books yet.

I have been using the more familiar recipe books I know. But I would like to break these books in though.

Thank you, that is very helpful. It is interesting learning about the Sloppy Joe. I think the history of America and climate and the very diverse group of people who settled in North and South America have resulted in some interesting food. It is good to be able to learn how to make veg*n versions of these things. I am more familiar with Asian food than North and South American food, it seems quite exotic to me.

Ah, I see she uses green lentils there. It doesnt specify in the book so I assumed that any lentil would be good, though I wanted to check first. I use red lentils for my dalignaise (bolognaise) and I wasnt sure what sort of texture brown lentils would add to it.

Cool. Well I will let everyone know how it went when I make them, and i will post a photo.

So, I have Joe simmering away on the stove now. It all went smoothly except for one thing- I didnt cook the lentils properly, and a number of them are still hard! Aaaargh! Perhaps I should have used red lentils! Anyway I will cook Joe for a while and see if I can get the lentils to soften.

Half an hour later, I FINALLY gave up on those lentils, as they insisted on being firm and intact and slightly crunchy. I didnt want the rest of the mixture to turn to mush, so I took them off the stove. They are edible enough, anyway.

That is really blurry, sorry, there was steam coming from it and that obscured the picture.

Yes I know that it is supposed to be on a bread bun, but I had some rotis that had to be eaten.

Verdict: It was very nice, will be going on my list of easy things to make. Though I actually preferred the Joe mixture before adding the mustard, so next time I wont put it in.

Can you eat leeks? Anyway I dont think it matters, all you need is the lentils and a nice combination of veg... I will be making it again too, it was great comfort food.

That sounds like a good way to serve it. It would possibly make a good nacho or taco filling too....
