This has been my 3rd ciggarette free day!!!

I don't know how I feel. I know part of me is craving one really badly, but then I also feel that power at not having given in yet.

I do keep chewing on straws though - it seems to make people nervous.

If I can manage a week I will be really proud. If I fail , or fail after managing one week, well, I'll just try harder!

I have decided to view it the same way as I do my weight loss.

I have an ideal goal, but any improvement is better than nothing!

Congratulations! I have been cigarette free for 10 days now, so I know how you feel.

I wrote a list of all the reasons why I should quit - eg "its bad for me health, it gives me asthma, it smells" etc and put it in my handbag. Whenever I feel like a cigarette, I read it. It really helps.

Bethanie, I just read your post about making choices each day and that really inspired me. It also made the task seem a lot easier - I don't need to think about next week, next month etc. I just need to make a choice each day and each day is a new chance if I DO screw up.

Congrats from me, too! I've never been a smoker, and I abhor it (in addition to being allergic to it)! I can proudly say I was instrumental in a co-worker of mine quitting a few years back. I'll always encourage and support anyone who is trying to quit. I think the tobacco companies should pay for programs to help individuals quit smoking.

If I could smoke one a month, or treat it like chocolate - rare treat, maybe I would feel differently. But once I start, I find it very hard to stop. I know my smoking turned into a proper addiction when I got my eating under control so this is quite scary for me to do. I don't want to swap one problem for another again.

Schoska,

Wow... this is not at all silly! Congratulations!!

And as for the possibility of trading one problem with another, I would think that, for now, anything you eat would be safer than another cig, so focusing on avoiding just that should be fine.

haha even the pumpkin in my fridge with the fur on it!??

Thanks for all the support everyone. I really appreciate it. It is really good to have people to talk to - especially as my family don't know I smoke so I can't get the neccesary morale boosting from them

*big hugs to all*

Not silly, Schoska. It's awesome. Very, very awesome....

When I was quitting, I told myself that if I could go 3 days without going off the edge or creating missing relatives, then I would consider myself an official non-smoker. Then, I went and told myself that if I could hang on for 3 weeks without a ciggie, then I would be a real non-smoker that killed the habit for good ('cause it takes 3 weeks to make a habit happen...)! My Hub, on the other hand, did it one day at a time but kept telling himself each day: "This is a new day to go forward in my quest [to be a non-smoker]. Yesterday, I was a new person but today I will make better strides than I did yesterday and do more than the day before because my goal is what I want, and my goal is what I will have...". Whatever your method, you've made it to the 3rd day without a lung-rocket to hurt you. YEA, YOU!!!! You can make it go much longer without probs, too! I know you can. I have confidence in you. Give the 1 finger/2 fingers up to the tobacco companies. Their stuff may be strong, but you are stronger!!! You can do it, Schoska. I know you can!

But right now, I'm so happy, I'm dancing!!! YEA, YOU!!!!!!!

You see, those carrots are why I am forced to disagree with Mskedi about eating the pumpkin. I'm sure, given 5 more minutes it will be doing the same thing!

Oh well, I'm off to have some nicotene substitute (hideoulsly strong coffee)

GRRRRRRRRRr to the tobacco companies!!

Awesome!!!

I'm an ex-smoker myself, so I know what a challenge it is.

When you get a craving try this:

Deeeeeeeeep Breath Innnnnnnnnnn

hold for a sec

Let it out Slooooooooowwwwwwlyyyyyy

pause

Repeat

Sounds goofy, but it really does work. They say one reason is because smokers are used to that inhale/exhale of the cigarette - and that is part of the ritual of smoking. The slow in and out breath (sometimes it takes up to three repeats) is supposed to calm that part of you that is craving.

It really worked for me (and still does)

lol.

How about this... if you smoke another cig, you have to EAT the pumpkin!

Keep up the fabulous work. I know nothing about quitting myself (never smoked in my life), but I know what kinds of things can happen if you don't. I watched my grandpa die slowly due to smoking related ailments -- strokes, heart attacks, paralysis (from the strokes), hooked up on oxygen -- all of it much worse than a dancing pumpkin. Just think what a higher quality of life you'll have!
