A horse broke its leg and had to be euthanized during the Calgary Stampede's controversial chuckwagon race Friday night.

Animal welfare groups have called for the end of the chuckwagon races - or of the Stampede altogether - because of deaths associated with the event.

Six horses died in the 2010 Stampede chuckwagon race. Two died of heart attacks, two were euthanized after suffering injuries, one broke its back from bucking too hard and another died 40 minutes after the race was over.

Stampede officials have made changes to the race to address the injuries, including reducing the number of outriders on horseback from four to two, and implanting the horses with monitoring devices.

Should the Calgary Stampede chuckwagon race be cancelled? What about other rodeo events at the Stampede? Let us know what you think.

The amount of horses dying in these races is RIDICULOUS.

I am comforted that the poll is swinging in favour of cancellation though. Alberta is hardcore cattle country so I would have expected otherwise.

Every year I hear animals getting injured and killed at the Calgary Stampede. They should eliminate the whole thing, but of course they wouldn't because of all the tourists and money it brings in. I don't know why anyone would pay to see something like that.

The entire damn thing should be cancelled obviously.

Those last two comments were what I was thinking when I read the thread title. The entire concept of rodeos is based on animal abuse and exploitation. However banning one rodeo event at a time is a good way to take the "baby step" approach to animal rights in mainstream society.

I don't see any other way to successfully do it. Public opinion seems to be on our side on this one, but just barely. Calgary loves its rodeo, they see it as part of their 'culture' similar to people who bullfight.
