I think the ratings system is somewhat fair these days. The only thing I disagree with is rating a movie "R" when the only thing in it is violence and gore. That should be "PG-13" in my opinion. Anyone over 13 can handle that kind of stuff.

As a side note, I notice that there is a lot less nudity in movies these days. Just about all '80s comedies shows some boobies. Many of the "PG" and "PG-13" back then would possibly be rated higher today. For example, look at Splash (1984). It is rated PG and it contains a little nudity (Daryl Hannah walking naked on the beach). Today, that would not be a "PG" movie.

Also, I think that if a movie throws in only 1 or 2 cuss words throughout the whole movie, then "PG-13" is fine. I have watched very tame movies before and at the end wondered why it was rated "R". I think somewhere in it must have been a cuss word. Sometimes the words roll by and you don't notice them. Now when you have a situation like the time where Southpark threw in the S word nearly 200 times in half an hour, that should be rated "R" (but it wasn't).

I do like when the ratings elaborate on why it received the rating (nudity, violence, disturbing images, sexual situations, etc). That can really help parents decide if the movie would be fine with them.

I don't rate Avatar, and I haven't even seen it.

Nudity is being made a greater deal than it really is.

Also, boobies in Airplane and a female bathroom nude scene in The Invisible Kid -- both rated PG.

And, should movies be rated?

Yes. However, the movies are not being rated fairly. If two women are getting it on, the movie will likely get an R rating. But if two dudes are exchanging goof juice, NC-17 automatically.

Finally, I encourage anyone who's interested in learning more about the movie rating system to watch the film This Film Is Not Yet Rated.

I think I've seen this available on streaming Netflix. I may have to watch it.

I agree with having ratings. I disagree with how they're currently assigned. The system should be fair and transparent, with published guidelines, and detailed explanations given to the movie makers to let them know why their film was rated a particular way.

And yeah, there used to be a lot more nudity in PG movies. I was shocked to discover that Barbarella was rated PG.
