Hi everyone, I've been vegitarian for 3 years/vegan for 8 months/ and just started being raw vegan. I'm fine with this change, but we've been having a hard time financially recently, so I feel bad that my mum spends extra money on groceries (im 15 so obviously she pays for my food). I turn 16 at the end of January, so I will be getting a job soon. When that happens I will easily be able to afford it. So, I was just lookin for some advice. Do you think that I should just postpone this until later?

Thanks to all who reply.

Why not just flat out ask your mother what she thinks?

Another thought is to learn to cook/prepare food. Vegetarian can be very much cheaper than a meat-based diet, vegan is only more expensive if you regularly splurge on mock cheese and pre-cooked meals. I can't see how going raw would cost more, unless of course you're planning to live of out-of-season mangos, blueberries and premium harvest almonds. Instead of buying the fancy stuff just get what is cheap and in season.

I think you could easily be raw if you kept it simple. You don't have to buy a food processor (odds are your mom already has one) or a blender (same thing) or a dehydrator. You can keep it simple and eat mostly greens/salads, whole in-season fruits & veggies, smoothies, and the like.

To be honest, sometimes I WISH I had a tighter budget (knock on wood) so that I would be forced to learn how to be less spendy on things like gadgets and special or expensive foods.

First of all, welcome to the boards, Nicole. Congrats for making the switch to being a raw vegan!

I'm with Jessica Alana - keep it simple. I've been transitioning to a raw vegan diet (and going 100% now!), and I didn't find it to be more expensive. Big salads, nuts and seeds, fruits and veggies straight out of the fridge. No preparation. That seems to keep it cheaper, because then you're not spending a lot of money on specialty items for recipes.

If you think it's still going to be a huge burden on your mother financially, then you could always wait to be 100% raw until you get a job and can help out with the groceries. Whatever you choose, good luck!

No advice but welcome and good luck Your mom sounds really cool!

I find being Vegan to be pretty cheap EXCEPT we are both addicted to the Vegan cheese and the Vegan mayo lol... but as far as raw goes I really don't know anything.
