LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- An outbreak of contagious diseases at a shelter where officials admit they kept animals for too long without destroying them has forced the killing of about 1,000 dogs and cats, officials said.

Visiting inspectors from The Humane Society of the United States discovered the outbreak of the diseases -- distemper and Parvovirus in dogs and panleukopenia in cats -- Lied Animal Shelter spokesman Mark Fierro said.

"We caused the animals pain, and that is something we are committed will never happen in our shelter again," said Janie Greenspun Gale, board chairwoman for the Animal Foundation, which operates the Lied Animal Shelter, according to KTNV News in Las Vegas.

This is horrible.

I read in another article that they've changed their policy to euthanise animals not adopted after 72 hours.

That does not seem like an improvement, does it?

72 hours is barbaric.

Agreed, but the problem arose because they didn't want to euthenize them in such a short timeframe. The pets became overcrowded and disease moved in. They have to strike a balance somewhere, or think of some alternative...

Should other animals die then? I am sure they can't afford all of the medications. If they can't treat the illness, it will just keep spreading.

What a tragedy. I used to work at a shelter and one day they went through and took 12 cats away to be killed. These cats were friends of mine, Id spent time with them every day. I cried for days and quit my job soon after. Its disgusting, simply disgusting. I still feel sick thinking about it. I wish I had been stronger and had been able to keep my shelter job because I know I was the only one who gave them any love..but I just cant deal with stuff like this.

I wouldn't be able to, either. Can't they do something to raise money and get a bigger shelter or something? Or just euthenize the sick animals? Don't they have vets or something? There has to be another solution that doesn't involve killing these animals needlessly.
