I've been given a sewing machine (about 30 years old, but in perfect condition) and I feel like getting back into making some clothes.

Has anyone had any experience of making clothes out of pleather or velvet?

It is something that I never got round to, and I hear loads of horror stories of how difficult it is due to the elasticity etc of the material.

So, any tips?

Do I need special needles/thread etc?

For heavy fabric you need special needles - I know you can get ones for denim, so pleather may be similar. The instruction book should tell you what kind of needles are to be used for what fabric and the machine may come with a set of different ones.

Pleather isn't that stretchy, is it? For materials of different 'stretch' it's the stitching you use that matters as well as using the right needle. You may need to use a different foot for special fabrics too.

However, I haven't actually sewn pleather before.
