Senate Deal Secures Fall Vote on

McCain-Lieberman Global Warming Bill

[Aug. 1, 2003] In a surprise move on Thursday, Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman forced the U.S. Senate to agree to a fall vote on the Climate Stewardship Act (S. 139), a landmark global warming bill with bipartisan support. This came as the Senate passed bad energy legislation without voting on the McCain-Lieberman bill, which we had hoped would be offered as an amendment.

GOOD NEWS:

While we had hoped for a vote on the McCain-Lieberman bill this week, the Senate leadership's promise to schedule a straight up-or-down vote on the bill this fall is great news. It allows the Senate to vote on the Climate Stewardship Act as a stand-alone bill rather than as an amendment to other legislation, like the energy bill. It also gives Environmental Defense more time to build support in the Senate and collect more signatures for our global warming petition

So far, over 130,000 citizen co-sponsors have signed our petition. Tell a friend!

Environmental Defense thanks our members and e-mail activists who took action by calling senators, signing the global warming petition, and spreading the word about our campaign. Your efforts, along with the work of Environmental Defense's staff and our national advertising campaign, really made a difference and are building the momentum we'll need when the Climate Stewardship Act comes to a vote in the fall.

ENERGY BILL:

While the vote on the Climate Stewardship Act was scheduled, the Senate passed a disappointing energy bill (S. 14) that favors fossil fuels over renewable energy, lacks any real conservation measures, and fails to deal meaningfully with global warming. "Finding environmentally friendly provisions in this bill is like looking for a needle in a haystack," said Environmental Defense legislative director Elizabeth Thompson. The U.S. House of Representatives passed their own bad energy bill earlier, so Congress must reconcile the differences between these two bills in a conference committee later this year. Stayed tuned for more.

Does anyone know if the renewable energy tax credit was extended? I was doing a little research, and it looks that facilities constructed after Sept '03 won't be eligible unless it was extended. This would be a huge blow to wind farm construction.
