I agree that it sends a message that it is OK to exploit animals for fashion. But really, it's one of those questions where people want to antagonize us and peg us as either an extremist or a hypocrite, so it’s not really a productive conversation.
Speaking for myself, if those are the choices, I'd rather be ethically consistent even if that appears to others as extreme. With clothing, specifically leather and wool, when I consider what they were and where they came from it makes me slightly sick to consider wearing it, even secondhand. There are alternatives, and they aren't all eco-negative, either.
