I was walking to work today and saw a large brown bump in my apartments parking lot. I was curious and walked up to it. I was surprised to see it was a huge (2-3 feet long 1 /2 wide) snapping turtle. I thought for a minute about what to do, I remembered that there was a lake across the street from my house. I picked the big guy up (being very careful that he could not turn around and bite me) and ran him across 4 lanes of traffic. He only tried to bite me once. When he saw the watter he got all excited. I put him in and he swam away! I feel like such a hero. I just wanted to share

Hee hee hee. I am seeing the looks on the faces of the drivers on the road watching you carry a huge turtle. Yay you for saving the turtle!

I did the same thing once! the turtle was in the middle of a busy road. I also once saved a chicken that was cruising around in the street in a residential neighborhood. I walked around with her, which was funny, and i followed the cries of her little chicken friend that was calling for her and put her in her yard. I just love stopping traffic for little creatures!

nice work! i'm a turtle freak. my parents live on a lake in a neighborhood, so whenever i'm home and it's hatching season i scale the streets....the moms lay the eggs far away from the lake, so they babies have to cross the street and sadly, often get eaten by birds, run over or dried up by the sun

i try to save as many as i can. i'm sure i'll find some more this year. turtles are Soooooooooo cute. they have great personalities too!

here's a pic of one of the babies i found, and the big one was just hanging out in our yard....the baby is on top of the big one, heh

freakin' cute they are! (as stonecrest knows, i have tons of turtle pictures)..

For me, I have an affinity for birds. Occasionally, a baby bird will fall out of the trees in my front yard. Once, after making sure it was safe from neighborhood cats (as I usually do when I find one), I saw an adult sparrow flying around, franticially almost. I put 2 and 2 together, and I put the baby bird as high up on the tree as I could. And it was so beautiful, the mother bird heard it making noise, came close to it, and had it follow her to the nest!

I was just so touched.

That is great! I want to save a turtle! When I was in Florida (Boca Raton) I saw a huge sea turtle on the beach! It was like 10 PM, and I think it was coming out to lay its eggs!

Wow.....I just saved a gopher turtle last week! It was really funny...actually. I was driving in a suburban neighborhood and out of the blue...there was a turle! He was crossing the street pretty fast, but there was no way I could leave him there. I pulled over and ran up to him. He popped back in his shell. I picked him up, put him in a hamper next to me in the car and drove around till I found a good spot to put him. Does anyone know anything about gopher turtles? Where their normal habitats are? The turtle landed a nice big poo in the laundry basket on the way. This reminds me....anyone who touches a turtle should be warned of the possibility of salmonella poisoing. Turtles do carry it. But they are cuties.

We have a lot of turtles and tortoises here. Whenever I see one crossing, or starting to cross, a road, I stop my car and carry it across. Turtles are apparently very territory-oriented, so you should't take them out of their territory, and you should carry them to safety in the direction they were headed.

I've never saved a turtle, but if I saw one crossing the road, I would help him/her across. Today I almost stepped on a caterpillar, luckily I didn't and made sure he made it to the grass before I kept walking. I've always thought caterpillars were kind of cute so I was glad that he didn't get stepped on.

Ntelligentidiot, I've always liked caterpillars too; in fact, I enjoy stroking (very gently!) the fuzzy ones.
