I heard on NPR today that scientists are infecting Chimps with Sars to better understand the disease.

My heart aches for all these poor Chimps

Im sorry to say this.. i do love animals and all!

But i would prefer they injected it into a few chimps and found a cure, rather then it become a world epidemic,

It is spreading fast and killing many people...

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome

In the United States, there is no indication of community spread at this time. CDC continues to monitor this situation very closely.

What CDC is doing about SARS

CDC is working closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners in a global effort to address the SARS outbreak. For its part, CDC has taken the following actions:

Activated its Emergency Operations Center to provide round-the-clock coordination and response.

Committed more than 300 medical experts and support staff to work on the SARS response.

Deployed medical officers, epidemiologists, and other specialists to assist with on-site investigations around the world.

Provided ongoing assistance to state and local health departments in investigating possible cases of SARS in the United States.

Conducted extensive laboratory testing of clinical specimens from SARS patients to identify the cause of the disease.

Initiated a system for distributing health alert notices to travelers who may have been exposed to cases of SARS.

This absolute BS! I'm so friking angry!!! I'm not a violent person, but I would to inject those friking "scientists" with SARS. How dare they!!!

Firstly, only 155 ppl have died so far. WAAAAAAAAYYYYY more ppl die of a common cold or flu every year! 2 ppl in Australia contracted the disease and they ddin't die, they treated it! So why have they got to test on chimps???

I honestly feel pyhsically sick.

155ppl so far... It hasnt been a year, yet, so you cant compare that to a years worth of deaths from Influenza, And if we hadnt found (cant think of the world right now... sort of like immunization, prevention etc..) for that then many more people would die from it...

This is necessary, though. SARS is becoming an epedemic, for cripe's sake. If it weren't necessary, I'd get pissed off. I still am (a bit), but if they must... then they should do what they have to do. It's not like any of us have a better way to find a cure.

sars is only in certain places tho if we restrict it in those places im sure it will pass soon - and i dont agree with the chimps ok maybe if they were to find a cure right away but testing to understand it better thats wrong

I think that SARS has been really overplayed by the media (at least in Canada) Most people stand very little chance of getting it and even if they do they own;t die unless they are already vulnerable.

You can only learn so much from an advanced disease. Plus, you can't control for as many variables as you can in a lab setting.

News reports released on 4/16 said that people *not* in the vulnerable categories have died from SARS, and that the disease seems to be mutating.

To me thats like when people say "Plants are alive toö, so why do you eat them"...

its not the same..as eating meat.. likewise is that.

If the choice was humans dying or apes, i know what i would chose,

the apes didnt consent to it, but im pretty sure neither did any of the humans who contracted it.. and im sure if someone you loved or knew died from SARS you would feel very differently on the matter
