The only thing that seems to be growing in my yard (aka sandlot) are those tiny little burrs. I have read that they will not grow in rich soil, so I was thinking composting and maybe applying humic acid. Anyone had success with removing these irritating little things?

depends on the type of sand burrs you have, there are types that grow in rich soil, sandy soil or any soil.

The best thing you can do is get out there with a weeder tool and hand uproot them all one by one.

Though I have heard of at least one interesting peson making sand burr wine.

Eventually if you mulch enough, you'll get rid of them. I used to have some in the garden, but after a few years of mulching, I think they are all gone.
