Hey you all
So I'm in need of some advice there...

Yesterday I took my last tablet of Veg-1 and I am now without any B 12 supplement at all.
I checked what they had at the supermarket today but the highest dosage I could find was 1.4 microgram which seems to be really low. I haven't checked the chemist yet, but since I don't speak Chinese that might prove difficult anyway.

Also, I've been a strict vegetarian for about 1 year and half now and ovo-veg for more than 2 years before that (with about 2 eggs/ week) but I've taken supplement only for the last 3 months all in all. So I'm thinking that my B12 reserves might be in he low-end (and I also went through anorexia and other eating disorders before that which doesn't help at all), though in truth, I've no idea.

My question is, what do I do? I won't go back to France until at least August 2012. Do I try the low B12 supplement I'v found, considering that it's better than nothing or do I stop taking B12 altogether? Thing is, the supplement advertised for "soft capsule" on the box, so I'm afraid it's going to be gelatin.
I'm already using too many non-vegan things for lack of other options (which is why I call myself a strict-vegetarian and not a vegan) and am somehow reluctant to add another one just for taking care of my "precious" human health.
Also, the supplement is a combined vitamin with plenty of things I don't need.

What would you do if you were in my shoes? I really don't want to go back to vegetarianism, even if it's "just" for a few months.

Thanks a lot for your help!

ETA: Sorry for the typo in the thread's name, I can't type to save my own life... :S

Hello there. I fixed the thread title for you

I think you definitely need to take care of your health. You're not really doing anyone any favours by getting yourself sick. 1.4 micrograms are not much, but maybe you could take several per day? (Depends on which other vitamins are in there ...) The way B12 absorption works is that the more you take in one dose, the less effective is the absorption. And vice versa - if there is really little in the dose, then the absorption is really effective. So maybe 3 or 4 tablets spread out throughout the day could be enough. Some is better than nothing in any case.

Another option which might not be possible would be to have someone send supplements to you from abroad, or purchasing through postal order / Internet. Not sure about import restrictions etc. in China... Another possible (or impossible) option: If you're anywhere near Taiwan, maybe you could go there on a little trip to purchase some supplements? Veganism seems to be a lot more common there, so presumably they have vegan supplements.

I'm sorry this is causing you distress. But you got to do what you've got to do, and I don't think anyone here will think less of you for it.

You can try nutritional yeast? Some females are concerned it will exacerbate yeast issues, but that's controversial imo...

That will only work if the nutritional yeast has been fortified with B12, in which case B12 should be found in the ingredients list. But yeah, it's a good idea if you can find it. I guess I completely forgot about fortified foods in my post above. Some soya milks and other foods are fortified with small amounts of B12, so if you can find something like that, it will definitely help. Although the amounts of B12 in fortified foods are often small, it can be enough if you spread out the intake thoughout the day.

Look for another supplement without gelatin. If you absolutely cannot find one, take the gelatin one until you get back to france because your other option is no supplement at all which could be risky to your health.

Thanks for fixing the mistakes I.Summer

So I've been to the supermarket again and checked the dosage and content of the multi-vitiamins and it's definitely not something I want to take several time a day. It's a multi-vitamin with pretty much everything covered I guess, so I don't want to overdose since I'm sure my diet already gives me pretty much everything I need.
Taiwan is out of the question too, it's too far and, in any case, I'm not even sure China would authorise me to get there and back again (I could probably go, but coming back would be another matter).
Couldn't find anything at the chemist's either, well the same kind of low-B12-dosage multi seen at the supermarket seems rather uniquitous.

I'll try to arrange something with one of my veg friends in France, hoping the tablets can make it through custom and also that the shipping won't cost an arm...

@ Stasher: seems there's none out there or, at least, those I saw all seemed to be made of gelatin or what could be gelatin

@ dmclean: This is what is usually said but it can actually differ from person to person. I'm afraid my level was already rather low before I went vegan as I was already eating a mostly vegan diet. I also sufffered from anorexia for a while, which can deplete your B 12 stock (do you ay stock in that case?). Tobacco and anxiety don't help either and I'm a very anxious former smoker.

Well end of www.mylife..com, just wanted to voice my concern and ask for advise, not blab about myself ^^

I'll guess I'll go for the multi I've seen so far before getting the other. Don't really want to think about swallowing that stuff though.... yuk!

Assuming you have friends/family in France, have someone buy you the supplement you want and mail it to you.

Doesn't it take like 2-3 years without B12 to develop a deficiency?

Different for different people. Some people claim to have lasted 20 years without fortification. I burned all of mine in just over a year.

I commend you for thinking about not wanting to overdose on some supplements that are not safe to do so, but how are you "sure" that your diet gives you everything you need? Sometimes we can think we are getting what we need but our blood chemistry tells a different story. Have you had blood work done lately? I'm guessing you haven't as you seem to be concerned about B12.
