Thanks for sharing this! Awesome!

Unfortunately, the Shrine circus, complete with elephant rides and other animal acts, is returning to my town this year. :/ Me thinks I need to get my butt in gear and do some activism myself. I'm getting really sick of the advertisements for it lately.

It was awesome, except for one religious nut who bothered us for 10 minutes saying we didn't care about people, that we should be protesting abortions, and that we didn't follow jesus or something......he was an a-hole.

You should do some advocacy!! PETA coloring books are awesome. Their posters I think are the best, you just have to consider and realize that many people will turn away when they see that peta logo.

That's a shame but no surprise about the religious person coming down on you like that. I have actually had that thrown at me by people at my church too.

I have a whole boxload of leaflets from Vegan Outreach and United Poultry Concerns leftover I need to pass out. I haven't been active with leafleting since I landed a full time job after graduating from college last Fall. I might go over to the PETA site and other places and see what kind of information on circuses I can find to pass out.

Is that your family with you?

Not surprising. I find the Christian Vegetarian leaflets "would jesus eat meat" are helpful when dealing with THOSE people. It wasn't a vegetarian event though, though most of us were vegan, so it didn't really fit in to give one to him, not that he would have accepted. Turns out at the later schedule today, the dude came back and harassed one of my friends with his child....again. She had a bullhorn and the dude didn't move even though his child was right in front of it.

I wish I was more active with leafletting. I do it sometimes with groups at my college, but otherwise I feel kind of bogged down with how my classes or going. IT's not that I have a lot of work, it's that my grades aren't where they should be and apparently I sent a professor an email she took the wrong way and took 10 minutes out of class lecturing about horrible, rude, emails that don't deserve a response.....soooo that's been stressing me on top of me just sucking at the math class I'm in. So often when I feel like I should be leafletting or doing something, I feel guilty thinking that I should be studying, but not wanting to study till the last minute because I'm stressed and upset thinking about my classes. It's just not a good semester for me lol.

Congratz on your job though, maintaining an income is important!!

PETA has tons of lit so you won't have trouble finding any. I just wish their logo wasn't so obvious, lol but they probably have reasons for what they do.

Oh and no, those were some people who came down to help. One of them around my age and first year of veganism! She's just as passionate as I was when I first started so it was kind of nostalgia for me lol.

I don't envy you having to get through a math class. Eek! That was my worst subject. Funny thing is, I have to calculate chemotherapy dosages and bill for waste on a daily basis at my new job lol. Eternal punishment. But I guess I will take that over algebra and calculus in college. I'm so sorry you are struggling with grades. And that email, that would be a bit disconcerting!

I can very much relate to the stress. My new job has been stressful. Not so much the work itself, but trying to find my way in the social circle and to get some job training and so on. I feel grossly inadequate and undertrained right now and then feel guilty for it and I generally struggle with self confidence anyway. I have trouble being sociable with others too, dealing with social anxiety, and my depression has been unbearable lately. It just seems to go in circles doesn't it? Stress causing more stress and panic and then causing me to be so overwhelmed I don't move forward at all because I am too stressed. Sighs. You have to do what you have to do to take care of yourself. You have a lot on your plate to juggle!

I have some of those CVA leaflets also. I shared one with my husband's VERY religious family and it backfired. Long story, but they think the CVA people are not true Christians and that vegans are part of a cult. Sighs.

Most of my activism as of late has been behind the scenes, working with the Nutrition Services at my place of work (I work for a large medical organization) to get vegan items on the menu. In fact the first vegan special is being rolled out on Monday! I wish I could share the link to my organizations online menu, but it is only available to employees, even though the cafeteria is open to the public. The Nutrition Services director has been incredibly open minded and generous about this project though, and it gives me hope! I sometimes wish I could do more also, but like you I am just stressed and overwhelmed with my present situation and have a lot on my plate to juggle. Leafleting was hard enough for me because I am not a very outgoing person so I had to build myself up for it each time, and I had to do most of it alone up here as there are not any vegan organizations in my area. Thankfully Vegan Outreach helped me a lot with support and I called them on the phone a lot for advice and communicated through emails too. I work 8 to 4:30 during the week which makes it hard to take to the streets when the crowds are at their greatest and college classes are going on. I hope to be able to eventually find some weekend events to leaflet at. For now it's all I can do to catch up with everything by the time the weekend gets here, and deal with my exhaustion. Maybe a letter to the editor would be a better approach for me to bring awareness to the coming circus than leafleting.

Oh wow, that's sad mad math skillz you have!! It's not so much as math class as more of a class that uses a lot of math. Still bleh...

Oh no, so they didn't do enough training? Well that just sucks. Sometimes it eventually clicks but I imagine it's very stressful till it finally does. Awww :( Seems like you are dealing with quite a bit yourself. I don't know about the social anxiety, but I know vitamin D helped a lot with depression feelings I was getting. It can help some, but if it's the environment causing the depression, which is more and more likely the case in our world, then it can only do so much.

Well there goes that idea then. Can't beleive it backfired. And yeah people not being true christians, seems like a lot of them lol. Specially this guy that bothered us, like where does he even get off? lol

Wow that's awesome!!! Your work is going to be the foundation for future vegan food I know it!! Can't believe they wouldn't already have vegan items on the menu......*face palm* I do meatless monday at my school and it's just abysmal, no one care and the staff don't really want to work with me to make GOOD veggie food. Most of the workers, because of situations like yourself, stress, worrying to pay pills, fatigued and tired from being overweight in America, just aren't interested in their job, so we are seeing a lot less postiivity and energy just in general. You will find some time! I know it, and don't beat yourself up while you can't at the moment. The animals would understand, you have done so much for them already. Maybe not up your alley but I have friends that leave these leaflets in the bathrooms or around tables of places they go. So if you don't have time to be on the sidewalk, it can be an option. Yes, doing it alone can be scary and bring up anxiety!! I think the more you do it though, the less scary it will become hopefully. We need everyone to do their part, so go ahead and write the letter to the editor if you feel that fits you best! Overall just do what feels right and best to you. Push yourself out of your comfort zone but know when to take a step back for yourself to catch up :)
