I'm sure we've all experienced a "WTF?!" moment in a restaurant. Share yours.

I was in a restaurant (obviously) called Grumpy's, which is conveniently located near a gas station. I ordered this combo plate, and asked if I could trade the chicken fingers for some type of vegetable. Apparently they don't serve vegetables. Yet they have a vegetarian pizza (which makes you kinda wonder). I just found it kind of shocking, since it's supposed to be a "fancy-ish" restaurant.

I usedto get the eggplant at Olive Garden until i found out that the breading had egg... also I asked if they could bake it insted of deepfrying it; apparently that was too hard a cooking order for them.

A fancy-ish restaurant called Grumpy's? Hehe. Sorry, had to laugh at that one.

My usual WTF is when I am inevitably pushed into eating at a seafood restaurant with my family (they are from maine.) When I ask for a vegetarian dish, they always look at me like I have 3 heads - "but... there's LOTS of vegetarian stuff... don't you see all the fish?" It is easier to find a decent meal for a vegetarian at a steakhouse than at a seafood restaurant.

That place was horrible. I don't even remember what I ate there but I don't think it was much. I felt like I had stepped back 100 years in history.

If we're listing "bad" surprises...

I recently was "stuck" going out with co-workers to Ruby Tuesday's.

When I asked (less than hopefully) if they could manage anything "strict vegetarian with no eggs or dairy" (because NO ONE has ever heard the word "vegan" here) the waitress said "Oh yeah, we have a whole bunch of low-carb items right here..."

Huh?

*And yes, I realize there might be some vegetarian low-carb options at some places, but we all know 99% of the 'low carb' options out there are chock full of meat and/or dairy...

...the waitress either did not listen to a word I said, or was clueless, or both...

Generally from what I observed, people at Ruby Tuesday don't really listen to what you're saying. No offense, I could be wrong, but at every Ruby Tuesday restaurant I've eaten at, I've asked for no cheese on my soy burger, and what do they do? Put cheese on the damn thing.

*Sigh* I'd rather just eat at home.

I was once eating at a Rockwells and ordered some salad "without the meat" which was orignally chicken and bacon, and it had bacon all over it, so I told the waiter I had ordered it without the meat, and he replied "Bacon is meat?!"

I went to a restaurant in Boston called Three Cheers (if you're ever near it stay far, far away). We were on vacation so it was either that or the fam was looking for a McD's, I settled quite quickly for the bar and grill. lol

Anyhow, they had a chicken and broccoli pasta dish so I asked the waitress if I could have that, minus the chicken and with a marinara sauce instead of the cheese sauce. I specifically said "I don't eat meat of cheese so can I have it without chicken and with a regular marinara sauce?" and she said ok. She brings me the dish, no broccoli, covered in parmesan cheese.

So I, very politely even though I was really upset, asked her to take it back because they forgot the broccoli and I CAN'T EAT CHEESE. The restaurant was NOT busy. A few minutes later she comes back with pasta, no cheese, and STILL no broccoli. Argh.

So I eat it and then we get the bill and they charged me for the $9 chicken and broccoli meal. I tell her I'm not paying $9 for a small plate of pasta when I didn't even get the broccoli and she tries to tell me "You requested it that and you have to pay menu price". After arguing with her and the manager he finally relented and took off $2 because they forgot the broccoli. He only did it because my IL's and husband got upset and told him that they heard me ask for the broccoli twice too and that the waitress obviously didn't have her act together.

Needless to say it was one of the worse restaurant experiences I've ever had.

So many people still think vegetarian means that you don't eat JUST red meat...They think that chicken, turkey, pork and fish are not included...grrrr.

I have a few meat eatng friends (not really good friends anymore but we used to be really good friends) that I have know for about 18 years (I have been veggie for 16)- they still keep asking me if I eat fish when we go out to eat (and we have gone out to eat a zillion times together)

Either they don't listen to me or they secretly wish I wasn't a vegetarian.

(i think it is both)

Ditto.

I ordered a Mexican Pizza with beans instead of meat at Taco Bell, and they gave me meat instead of beans! Good thing I noticed! They replaced it with the right order. The next time I went the cashier gave me a free drink because she remembered that incident. I ALWAYS check my food before I eat anything.

I almost wish this was just a veg*n issue...at least I could then believe there was hope and a chance for improvement. But sadly it seems that an awful lot of restaurant staff, from waitresses to managers are completely inept when it comes to customer service. I've been to so many places where standard dishes straight off the menu still don't turn up as they should, let alone a special request for no cheese/extra veg/whatever

I mean, really, how hard can it be to get it right when some poor sod has only ordered pizza no. 2 off the menu and a beer?
