I was driving home from work today and saw this billboard:<br><br><img alt="" src="http://i560.photobucket.com/albums/ss48/Tater922/1302040770-dc77655.jpg" style="border:0px solid;"><br><br>
My jaw dropped. I haven't looked into the website yet but come on...<br><br>
eta: Should this be moved to the Animal Rights section? And I just noticed the "rat/her" thing...clever <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="">

In all fairness to that ad, it <i>was</i> intended for the <i>Using Misleading False Dilemmas in Advertising Awards 2011</i> after all.

That part is clever. But that's the only clever thing about the ad.

Here's a idea reasearchsaves.org:<br><br>
Quit animal testing and let both of them live.

Well, that mouse is awfully cute, and won't be dumping 2,000 pounds of trash into the landfill every year, or living as though there are 20 more planets to pollute, so...<br><br>
Humans in general are just so proud to say that no matter what the cost to other earthlings they put their own wants first. People are supposed to accept the premise of the billboard and <i>of course</i> want the human to take precedence, no matter how some innocent animal has to live and die, or for what purpose.<br><br>
The idiocy with that billboard is that one of those two is being actively tortured and killed for a feature of birth - being born the wrong species; the other belongs to a species that tortures and kills on the chance that maybe someday possibly torturing and killing others will help them. I think people who hold that value are profoundly destructive to the planet and to others. Vivisection advocates can't be trusted - they're saying that they're willing to hurt and kill someone innocent on the chance that they can get what they want out of it.

This, there are animal-free and more accurate human-based tests under development. Computer models, DNA chips, microfluidics chips, tissue samples and more. It would be wonderful if government ditched the animal method in favor of any or all of these.

It would be, but I'm pretty sure that billboard is not geared toward the government mandated testing of pharmaceuticals. I'm pretty sure it's geared towards basic research, in which using animals is entirely voluntary.

This really upsets me, they are playing with peoples emotions. Show a cute kid and suggest without animal deaths she'd die, and bam, people don't care about the animals anymore. I hate how people get so black and white over animal rights. It's like when people insist if you fight for animals rights and care about testing etc you must not care about people or love animals more. I overheard an older woman behind me in a diner once talking about of animal activists care about animals more than people.

why is it somehow sacrosanct to "care about people more" anyway? I'm sure abolitionists were accused of caring about black folks (using a demeaning word for them) more than whites too. The assumption that it has to be a choice and there's something <i>right</i> about caring for one <i>more</i> is why we're destroying the natural world. Humans just assume themselves to be the most important beings on the planet, with the right to literally torture any other being if they want to. I don't think it's any more holy to say "humans come first" than it is to say "whites come first" or "men come first."

Even my mom, who thinks I'm a little too extreme, was appalled when I showed her the picture.<br>
Irizary, I love everything you said!<br>
KirstenKat, I agree with you about people being obnoxiously black and white about animal rights. On another forum I belong to, we have had very frustrating conversations- some members think that because I believe animals have rights, I must hate humans ???

The website is pretty ridiculous. There's a tab that says "Against animal research?" and I clicked on it.<br><a href="http://www.researchsaves.org/TwoColumnWireframe.aspx?pageid=83" target="_blank">http://www.researchsaves.org/TwoColu...aspx?pageid=83</a><br>
It then says "Please sign and submit this directive before you get sick or injured in order to insure you receive no medications, surgeries, treatments or disease therapies that have been tested or tried in research animals."<br><br>
Click on it. It's obnoxious.

From the site:<br><div class="quote-container"><span>Quote:</span>
<div class="quote-block"><b>Emma's Story</b><br>
Emma is a yellow lab that received innovative surgery to cure her of lameness thanks to advances made through animal research. Animal research saves animals too.</div>

So it's even OK to kill lots of other dogs to help one survive a condition? <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/huh.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=""><br><br><br>
Why can't we just support the Dr Hadwen trust? We can have our cake and eat it!

<br>
There has been enormous advances in medicine from unethical research, done on unwilling subjects. Mostly human subjects. From POWs, especially Auschwitz. From slaves. From mentally ill and disabled. From prisoners.<br>
I'd like to see that represented. After all, we have learned more from what we now term, and disallow as "unethical research"

I clicked the link. Didn't stay there for long, but what wound me up was this: "Larry is a research scientist, who works with mice..."<br><br>
I know it's petty, but he's hardly working -with- them. They don't go to work together.
