My mom was visiting this weekend. She lives in Sonoma, but used to live in San Francisco. She said that I should reccomment the restaurant called "Greens" to you all. I have not been, but she said it is very good. Here is the link for more information, location, menus, etc.

http://www.greensrestaurant.com/

1. This place is cheese heavy.

2. There may yet be some day when I can afford to go (well, I could stomach the lunch prices).

This place was featured on Food TV years ago & seemed quite reputable.

I have the "Fields of Greens" cookbook and have made a handful of things from it, all of which have been very good.

It looks like you could make the meals vegan. They offer an option of having the mushroom pizza without the cheese. They also have a vegan dessert available.

I've been there a few times and I recall you can find several vegan dishes or get something made vegan. The view is very nice, but I find the food enjoyable but underwhelming. When in San Francisco and choosing to go out for a fancy meal, I will usually pick Millenium over Greens. I find Millenium's food more innovative and interesting than Greens.
