...on fresh veggies and fruits!! All I want is a stupid mango or papaya (I love those taasty devils), but NOOO--they have to cost 1.99 for a papaya, or 1.20 for a mango! What! Don't EVEN get me started on all the COOL things they have, like cherymoyas (4.99/lb!), avacados (1.20 each), grape tomatoes (1.50 a pint!), pineapples (3.99 each unless on sale). And only once have I gotten to bite into a delicious pummello-- FOR 1.50! andd that's on SALE! GRRR... Guavas (4.99/lb) (I'll never try those). And let me not even mention strawberries, black beries, blueberries and anything organic!

You actually have all those things where you live?! Good grief, take me there, even if it is pricey!

I'd like to join this rant. All fruit seems to go up in price! I used to be able to find apples for .99/lbs. What happened to that? And grapes were 1.99/lbs the last time I went shopping. Plums, peaches, nectorines...all the things I love I can't afford.

I empathise. It is what I spend the most money on.

Thankfully tofu is extremely cheap here, which is quite a nice consolation, but fruit AND veg costs a small fortune.

The worst ever is trying to get fresh herbs though. Just about impossible to find, and so expensive. *grumbles*

i try to get all my fruits and veggies at the local farmers market - which is a bit cheaper than the hfs, but still is harsh on my wallet!

but in the long run, we'll probably save some $$ on health care cuz we'll be so healthy from getting our 5 a day

thats why people always say "but it's so EXPENSIVE to eat healthy i can't afford it" how ridiculous is that. even the farmer's market i go to is increasing in price slowly i've noticed. but my mom planted a massive garden so now I won't have to pay double for yummy organic stuff, well, except for the 3 hour drive to her house....

three dollars for two pounds of organic apples is the normal price for me.

Fruit prices can change because of frost in the blossom season or to dry wheater while the fruits grow....

In general I would say that our food is too cheap.

I agree, you need to buy in season. Papaya is expensive now because it is out of season. But that also means it doesn't taste good right now. You're not missing too much.

The secret is deffinately growing your own stuff. Many of those things are easy enough to grow veganic and yummy right on your back step. Even in pots.

I wish I could grow my own fruit but I don`t think it would grow to well here in Canada this time of year. There is still snow and it is cold. WHEN IS SPRING COMING?

Just to bring an optimistic note to this discussion... The Safeway I shop at has had organic bananas for 49 cents a pound for months now, which I think is cheap for any kind of bananas. Yay Safeway!

Let me join the band wagon! In my area, the prices are not only rediculous, but the selection is lousy, too! Maybe we all need to move to a "mini-commune" and grow our own fruits/veggies.

Here's to all the overpriced, low quality, lousy selection grocers who think nothing of our quest for better, more affordable fruits and veggies!

I usually spend $1.29 lb for organic apples....99 cents lb for organic oranges. Kiwi 3/$1.00. I buy a lot of these. In the summer I can get organic strawberries 2 pts for $3 and mangos are 3/$1.00 (rather than $1.50 each, like now)

My husband has tried to have a garden, but the results haven't been good so far.

One thing that has really gone up where I live are organic green onions...a small bunch for $1.29! (More than an entire head of lettuce) Also, red bell peppers are $4.25 lb.

I have a gigantic supermarket within walking distance of where I live. Lots of fresh fruit, but it's very expensive at this time of year. Ever tried Ya Pears? They don't have a lot of taste in them, but they're soooo juicy and the texture is nice.

Lots of selection in organic stuff. President's Choice has a whole line of organic products, but they tend to be on the pricey side too. My mom won't buy it. She says when I get my own place I can buy it myself. And I will if I can afford it!
