I want to start by saying that I am a vegetarian who seldom eats dairy and never eats eggs. It seems like everyone is very concerned with the hidden ingredients that might keep something from being vegan. Things like D3, Lactose (which is sometimes derived from fermented vegetables by the way), carmine, etc.

So here's my question, lets say that you are looking through the candy aisle, carefully reading the backs of packages and find a seemingly vegan candy. Do you buy it, even though you do not know where the sugar came from? My thought is that you can't really know which products are made with sugar filtered with bone char. Unless the product is specifically labeled vegan. Lots of things, not just candy are made with sugar, like soups, salad dressings, etc.

I would. I'm pretty lax about the sugar thing, just because the industry does not profit from the bone char and I'm just starting out. I'm planning to become more strict as I go along, but for now, yeah I would buy it.

But it... tastes... good.

Ehh, I am going to try to give it up eventually, but not any time soon.

Pretty much just depends how strict you want to be and are able to be. There are some vegans who avoid sugar in everything (both because of the bone char issue and also for health reasons), and there are vegans who don't care about the source of any sugar. Water is sometimes filtered through bone char also, so if that's a concern for you check the ingredient listing for water also. Certainly candy isn't something you need to eat, so it's a bit easier to avoid if that's what you want to do. More power to you!
