Yeah right MZCsmpsns, we should all just poop on the streets, wherever we feel like it now, you will just look away..

Whatever... This is not my world vision, people stopping and pooping and peeing wherever and whenever they feel the need. After all, it is a natural act, our bodies need it, just do it in public..

We are a "civilized" society, (and I mean that in the loosest way possible!!) and some bodily functions are better off left in the sphere of private environments, such as breastfeeding. And sexual relations (lol-that sounds so CLINICAL!), and excreting wastes, etc...

(This is nothing against women's breasts by the way, nothing sexual about this topic, that is a whole other topic, nothing to do with what the issue is at hand here....)

I'm not saying that we should all crap in the streets... but if anybody were to, I sure wouldn't stop and stare. As long as people don't leave their "mess" behind, then I don't care. Hell, I've urinated on lawns in random places... and w/one exception, people who saw it just kept driving/walking. Didn't bother me. No bathroom nearby, and I had to go, so instead of pissing myself I went outside. Big deal. Breastfeeding, however, is again, as I think I said, as natural as animals feeding their young. And animals are litter trained, such as humans are toilet trained. When I see kittens sucking on their mom's teats I think no different of it as when a baby is sucking on it's mom's breast. It's nature, it's natural.

I'd like to hear from anyone who can put forward a argument for social change to a situation where people can crap wherever they want.

Last year, while jogging at around 2 am, I had to take a crap reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally badly (I had eaten an entire tombstone pizza and yogourt). I was about 2 miles away from my house. I cotemplated just crapping in the bushes; there were few cars and noone would have noticed. Instead I decided to jog home and crap once I got there. About midway to my house, I start crapping in my shorts. I held whatever I could hold in and some of it shot up into my intestines. Eventually I take it anymore just ran beside some bushes pull my shorts down and released the rest of my excrement. In such situations, I beleive people should be able to crap wherever they want. It's a health issue for the individual and may cause serioius health problems. The crapper should have to clean up there mess though. I think holding in my crap and having some of it upshoot into my colon caused be to get apendicitis a few weeks later, which almost killed me and costed my $15,000.

Oh yeah, regarding defacating and urinating in public, I know Amsterdam has outdoor urinals right on the sidewalk without any doors. THere is also an outdoor toilet on a busy sidewalk in a major switzerland city boxed in a cube with clear walls so passerbys can see you do your duty. So, relieving yourself in public is becoming more acceptable in Europe. I'll go find the pictures for all you skeptics. I see no problem with the concept.

waste products stink.

do the world a favor - urinate and deficate (and other stanky things) in private, so others don't have to smell your stank.

welcome to civilization. have a nice stay.

[eta]I can turn my head, and not see the breastfeeding. I would have to run 100 yards away to avoid the stench of someone taking a dump in the town square.

As for those open door urinals; I think they are totaly sexist, as there is no way I could use any of those things...

I think it's disgusting that anyone would even consider doing that in public. It's disrespectful to others' property, whether you clean it up or not.

When you gotta go you gotta go.

Ah-ha! I found the perfect argument for public defecation and urination: defecation and urination in front of multiple observers is allowed in the social context of performance art, so obviously, for the sake of consistency, it should also be allowed in the social context of a street.

I challenge anyone to provide a justification for performance art that doesn't also justify public defecation.

I think whoever is saying that public defecation is okay is trying to irk others here because I honestly cannot even imagine how someone would think it was "okay" to take a dump in a public place (out of a toilet). Disgusting.

i don't think it's something i'd want to encourage, even with the idea of 'its ok if you clean it up'.

firstly, i don't think everyone would clean it up. in the uk, the town i live in has a lot of homeless people, people from travelling backgrounds, those who like to be called 'non bricks and mortar dwellers', and people with drug and alcohol problems. we already have the situation where some people from these groups use alleyways and walls as bathrooms. its unhygenic, and to be honest, quite destressing, to be walking back to work with your lovely just purchased vegan lunch, or walking down the street with a client or visitor, or a small child, and be faced with someone taking a dump, or the steaming, fly covered, stinking results of their and their friends bathroom efforts over the past few days- especially when there are 2 very nice, very clean, public bathrooms within 3 minutes walk of the area they choose to use.

as a society, once you put the idea out that its acceptable to do your business in public, you'll probably end up having to then provide facilities which people could use to clean it up (like people pooper scooper bins and kits, like they have for dogs in parks in the uk) on every bloody street corner, like litter bins (which also aren't used by everyone) and for waste disposal teams to come and empty the bins of what is pretty much hazardous waste (i'm thinking salmonella, listeria, food poisioning, even bloody dysentary). this 'clean up' system isn't cheap, and i'd not be keen for it to be added to my taxes.

in the uk, we have old stuff (you might know this, lol) including in places like Wells (in the south west of england- visit it people, its cool!) with some buildings and streets still standing from the times before bathrooms where invented. houses where the first floor overhangs the street for easy throwing of crap out of the windows, and roads where there are stone drainage grooves running down the sides of the cobblestone streets, attached to the moat of the local castle/abbey, so that a small stream runs don the sides of the road, washing the crap away. visiting these places, i find it easy to imagine how things would be if we hadn't progressed and developed to the extend that we have. it'd be stinking, and incredibly unhygenic, like it was then, with rats everywhere, along with flies and disease.

if you gotta go, in an emergency, and there isn't a store with a bathroom, you have the tools to clean it up, fine, go for it. i'm not bothered by little kids peeing into drains or hedges, or people doing the same on long car trips or hikes either. but if there is an alternative that is more hygenic, and less offensive to everyone else, i'd prefer people to use it- thats what we invented it for!

LOL!! This was a joke. There is no such thing in Switzerland!!! And actually, the picture you saw was a fake toilet where people could see OUT but no-one could see in. It was some kind of "artistic" project or something but it was never really built!!!!

There are big differences between the things that you're comparing (defication, eating, and sex).

Obviously, defication should not be done in public not because it is a per-se private affiar, but because it is important for reasons of sanitation and public health.

Sex in public is considered problematic because sex is socially considered an intimate and private act. Similarly, having sex in public may lead to the exposure of certain areas of the body which our culture sees as private and in the process of being used for sex acts as 'obscenity' or at the very least, a niusance in public.

Eating, on the other hand, is commonly public. We eat in groups both inside and outside of our homes. Breastfeeding is simply eating. It is a child eating it's natural food from the source--the mother's breast. There's nothing sexual about breast feeding (though admittedly our culture over-sexualizes and under-utilizes breasts) such that it would be considered 'private' or 'obscene' or in this sense, the same kind of 'public nusience' as sex in public would. Similarly, breastfeeding--or eating--in public doesn't impact public health and welfare as a sanitary issue that deficating in public does. Eating via nursing is perfectly sanitary.

Thus, your assertion that BF is private "in the same way" as deficating in public or having sex in public is false.
