A girl at work found out today that I have not eaten meat in over 5 days, yes, I am brand new to Vegetarianism. She is a personal trainer ( as well as a waitress where I work) and is really into body building and nutrition. She sort of got all nervous for me and started on about how I *needed to eat protein and I was going to get really sick if I don't incorporate at least some fish into my diet. I never ate seafood even when I was eating meat, why am I going to start NOW?

So, I am really bad at confrontation. I didn't know what to say to her. She was asking me what I ate and I told her that I have been eating food. lol honestly, I really didn't know what to say. I feel great, better, in fact, than I have felt in years. I have more energy and no digestive issues as I did before. As far as protein goes what should I be eating? What provides protein other than animal meat? I know I can google and look it up on my own but I want ideas. I am guessing that I have been eating enough protein and I don't even realize it.

Just need suggestions so I know what to say to know-it-alls. thanks. Oh, and I have not given up eggs or some dairy..yet.

meat isn't the only source of protien. Everything has at least incomplete protiens. easiest way to get a complete protien is beans and rice.

If you mean a competitive body builder, then PLEASE do not listen to her!

I can go on and on for the MANY reasons why not, but the last person you need advice from is a body builder.

We do not need as much protein as some people believe.

Good luck with everything! There are great people on here that already are helping you

Yes, thank you. Everyone is so helpful already. I have been eating a lot of beans and rice, some pasta, potatoes, Tons of green vegetables, kashi cereal with soy milk, and I don't really know what else because I am not monitoring it, I just eat food. I don't feel hungry and I feel excellent.

Whole grains, nuts, beans, legumes, soy products such as tofu, tempeh, TVP; seitan, and faux meats are all high in protein. Eggs and dairy also have a lot of protein in them. If this woman was that good of a personal trainer, would she really be waitressing?

If you're eating a good variety of veggies (all the colors), whole grains, beans and nuts, you'll be fine (you don't even need tofu if you don't like it.) It's the people (not just vegetarians) who eat nothing but junk who have problems getting enough protein.

And if she doesn't know you can get protein from eggs and milk, she doesn't know anything about nutrition (disclaimer: eggs and milk are not great sources of nutrition. plant foods are ALWAYS a better choice, nutrition-wise.)

Yeah, not to mention all of the horses and rhinos.

Like somebody else mentioned, people don't need as much protein as they think they do. Too much can be harmful to the kidneys.

I eat cashew nuts and beans for protein.

Don't forget the poor weakling Gorillas with their herbivore diet lacking in protein!

At my son's class party, we were all talking about Easter and who's making what (turkey or ham, of course) and they asked why I make vegan lasagna and I told them we are vegan and a class mom asked me "how do you live without protein?!!" I told her we get plenty of protein, and she asked how and I told her, "the same way all the other herbivore animals get their protein, plants!" Some people just don't think for themselves. Most people just follow the line and accept conformity as law. We live in a very programmed, "meat for muscles, milk for bones" bullsh*t kind of world. Victims of big business. I like to suggest "The China Study" to nutritionally uneducated people. It's a great resource!
