Does anyone here program? I am thinking about getting into it, but it looks very complicated, and I am an idiot when it comes to even basic things with computers. Where should I start?

I do it for a living What sort of programming and languages have you been doing before? What kind of programming do you enjoy? It's quite a varied field!

I'm currently taking my college's intro to computer science course. We've been working with java. Indian Summer is certainly more fit to answer your questions than I but I thought I would mention as a fellow beginner that programming is not nearly as intimidating as it first seems. If you like logic puzzles (and to a lesser extent math) you'll probably do well with it.

Weird. All of my posts seem to be getting deleted. Anyways, yeah Im not sure the exact kind of programming I want to do. Do you guys know of a book that could help me get started?

The class I'm taking has been using this one. It's quite pricy, though, and you can probably find something just as good for cheaper. I can't vouch for its quality either, since I haven't opened it since the first week. (The professor is good enough that I haven't had to do the readings...)

I am actually a computer program. What you know as the "person" with the username Sevenseas is a program created by a Belgian software firm, intended to mimic human behavior (sometimes failing to do so). After the so-called Tom Cruise bug causing excessive repetition will be fixed, ver. 2.0229 beta will be released. Your cooperation is appreciated.

I was going to find a suitable article on Wikipedia, but couldn't find one, so here's my own quick and dirty overview (probably full of bias and mistakes!) to a few of the languages I know of:

- C is a compiled language, and one of the most popular of all time. Most architectures have a C compiler, so the programs can be compiled and run almost everywhere. It has a lot of low-level capabilities (i.e. accessing memory and other resources directly). Some well known applications of C are the Linux kernel, and other Unix kernels.

- C++ is a compiled, object-oriented language that began as an extension to C. When compiled, the code can start and run pretty much on it's own (though it will of course often still depend on certain libraries).

A list of well-known programs written C and/or C++ is found here:
http://techscircle.blogspot.com/2009...ten-in-cc.html
Additionally, resource-hungry games have traditionally been written in C/C++. (I'm unsure if that is still the norm.)

- Java is similar in syntax to C++, but has a quite extensive built-in library of classes. Java is usually compiled into byte-code that in turn needs to be translated on-the-fly into machine code by a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) so that it can be executed. (I.e. you can't just run it stand-alone, you need the JVM as well.) The advantage of that is you can run the same byte-code on any platform (e.g. Linux, Windows, MacOSX etc) that has a JVM. One disadvantage is it often makes program execution slower because you need to load the JVM first, and then translate the byte-code into machine-code. Well-known applications are all Android apps, certain parts of OpenOffice, apparently the Mars Rovers run Java software etc.

- Python is an interpreted high-level programming language often used in e.g. scientific computing. It comes with a quite decent library of useful classes. As it's usually not compiled but interpreted, Python programs need to be run by an interpreter, I guess similar to the the JVM I mentioned earlier. One difference from Java is that you don't explicitly have to compile the program into byte-code as this is done on-the-fly by the interpreter. In my experience another notable difference from the JVM is that Python code usually starts up a million times faster than any Java code.

... and then there are a million trillion other languages. But life is too short, I need to get some breakfast!

How far do you want to go with programming? A career or a hobby? For me, I program a little as a hobby. I took a couple courses on C++, but it was difficult for me to understand. I use AutoIt, which I think is the easiest one to learn. They have support forums where you can ask questions. But don't go asking simple questions to them without reading the help file first (it's a very useful one).

Just to note, AutoIt is not a standard language. It's a homemade project developed by the open source community. You can quickly make some useful programs with it, but won't score you any points in the job market. It might be a good way to learn the basics of how languages work.

Become a designer instead. That way, you can make pretty stuff, hand it off to a developer and say, "Make this work!"

I learned some programming on the old BBC micros when I was a kid, which ran BASIC....I bought a C++ book, but couldn't get into it, so I downloaded a BBC micro emulator, so I can do the odd bit of programming on that. The modern languages seem strange to me,

I'm on right now. There's a group of us from the AR forum / Veggie Boards who chat on Skype, yep. Used to be group chats, but lately it's been more one on one. Anyone who's interested can send us a private message.
