I've been vegan for about a year now and I love it. However, I don't know if it's something specifically about my personality or what, but people get really defensive around me regardless of what I'm doing or saying- so I decided to come here and hang out with some people of a similar mindset. I like forums so much more than Facebook, but it seems that even the forums that I used to be able to call home are getting defensive about my choices.

So here I am. I've lurked on this forum without registering for a long time and I hope we can get along.

Thank you.
I'm already happy being here and reading post upon post about veggie-stuff without seeing animal-eaters dribbling in about canine teeth.

Welcome to veggieboards.

Don't worry about people getting defensive when you tell them you are vegan - that appears to be the default response. Often followed by 'what do you eat?' 'where do you get your protein?' 'where do you get your calcium?' and then 'oh, I could never do that, I love my meat/dairy/eggs too much'.

And then of course there's 'but what would happen to all the animals if we didn't eat them?'

Welcome, Taiga!

I don't qualify as vegan yet, but some time ago I resolved to stop eating foods with egg or milk in them. (It's been a bigger jump for me than going pescetarian and then vegetarian so long ago). When folks ask me why I don't consume milk or egg, my first answer is very short: I reply that the chickens and cows involved are not treated well (HUGE understatement, I know). If someone asks for more information, then I go into the details about their short, unhappy lives.

I realize veganism encompasses more than food, and that vegans avoid consuming eggs or milk on principle, even from cows or chickens treated as well as companion animals- but I don't know if I would be able to explain this to my non-veg friends and family.

Hi, everyone! Thanks for the responses and welcome.

(Taiga is me. I was sleep-deprived and realized that Taiga was not the name that I meant to put. I feel so stupid, hah. Sorry if this confuses anyone...)
