Meh, whatever. those signing statements aren't legally binding in any case, they just represent the president's interpretation of the law. Seeing as the judiciary is who interprets the law, all that matters is how the president acts on the law.

This president has signed over 700 signing statements! Hundreds more than any other president in U.S. history.

That makes a statement in itself, doesn't it.

Bush wants to be a dictator, a "decider."

Until Ronald Reagan became President, only 75 statements had been issued. Reagan and his successors George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton made 247 signing statements among them. As of 2006, George W. Bush has issued over 130 signing statements containing more than 750 constitutional challenges. [4]

thats 130 signing statments, not "over 700".

What's the deal with these signing statements? Does Bush actually get to override laws as he sees fit? Someone tell me that isn't the case!!!!

it does show you the way Bush is thinking though. Even if it is nothing more then commentary, it's still scary.

According to that Wikipedia article it looks like they're supposed to be used to clarify how laws should be applied, but that list of statements by Bush are all contradictory to the initial laws. The more I hear about Bush the more it seems like he'd prefer to be running a dictatorship.

In the very first response of this thread, I pointed out the legality of the issue. You can complain about how "bush wants to be a dictator", but this issue is meaningless with respect to the law. All that matters w.r.t. the president is how he acts on the laws, not how he signs them.

You don't think a leader's intentions or attitudes are important?

Depends on how they play out in his actions.

But I can say they are irrelevant to the legality of his behavior. It is not impeachable to say that you want to overthrow congress. It wouldn't be popular either, but it is in absolutely no sense against the law. Trying to do so is against the law. Saying it isn't.

Legally speaking, that's what this issue comes down to. Now you can say he's a crazy ******* if you want, but you can't say he broke the law or that this constitutes an impeachable offense.

No matter what the law is, the powers that be will do what they want anyway, for the most part. Governments behave above the law. Always have. Probably always will.

Wouldn't it be nice if one day humans actually acted humanely?
