I think it is about time we hailed the death of postmodernism. For the unfamilair, postmodernism is a huge social movement which has happened very recently. Postmodernism has impacted us hugely, with globalisation taking place, and the 24/7 culture has been spread. The media no longer comments on society, but atcually is a part of society, we don't care about the quality of things, as long as they look good, and no one gives a sh*t about authority. According to some crazy dude called Dominic Strinati, this means that we're living in a postmodern society. The term "postmodernism" is a very broad one referring to the idea of culture being absolutely anything. As andy warhol showed by calling soup cans art. Yes, there may be a lot of nasty things about postmodernism, but the worst has to be the art.

However, I'm getting sick of postmodernism. It's got to be one of the most boring and asinine cultural movements since shakespeare. So I propose that we try to bring about a new cultural movement. Since it's going to take place after postmodernism, why not call it postpostmodernism? We can borrow a few ideologies form yesteryear, but I think that instead of having a society wher eoyu can sh*t in a bed, put a few condoms next to it and call it art, (See tracey Emin) we can revert back to the age old method where you got paint and a brush and if it looked cool, it was art. It sure looks better than watching some guy kick a curry tray up and down the street.

The turner prize is an award that is given out to postmodern "artists". Basically, £20,000 is given to the guy who can make the oddest statement in the oddest way with the least amount of effort. it has been won by a soiled bed surrounded by usee condoms, a 10ft hexagonal box, half a sheep and lights going on and off. i can't believe that lights going on and off gets twenty grand! Call me a philistine, but I really can't see why I can't get twenty grand every time I step under the security light under my front door if some other bloke does. The turner prize has been regarded as a farce by much of the population. Ironically, it's the media (Particularly newspapers; notably the mirror) who are attacking it. (It's ironic because postmodenrism is being attacked in a postmodern way of the media influencing society.)

The thing is, no one can tell what art is these days. I could probably shoot someone, steal his wallet and get away with it if i say that it's performance art. I want real art! Someone, please usher in the postpostmodern era, so we can all enjoy sensible art! I hear that in the tate gallery (In london, not liverpool.) the bins are labelled to say that they are actually bins and not art. (i don't know if this is true because I just heard it.) This concept has been satirized on this website which asks you to distinguish between art and regular items:

http://www.modestypanel.com/art_or_crap/

Postmodern art is a joke. It is stupid, worthless, pointless and completely asinine. If you go to the walker gallery in liverpool, and otherwise respected real art gallery, they have a small gallery dedicated to postmodern art. Now someone's stuck a cardboard box to the wall, painted it with dulux, and the result is £60,000 worth of fine art!!! I have always said that now is a prime time for suicide.

Well I believe it to be over already - we are in a process of reconstruction - but I know people will disagree with me -

Problem is though Postmodernism has a double edge which almost makes it seem as though it is eternal.

I know what you mean though - I'm sooooooo sick to death of 'irony' .

As for a new name I read something *scratches head* and they suggested the Network Age.

Loki,

Have you ever seen the play Art? I can't remember who it's by off hand and I don't want to dig through my programs right now. Anyway, it's a comedy that takes a (huge) stab at modern art. It's quite possibly the funniest play I've ever seen. I saw it with Alan Alda a few years back. Hmm... Reza is the author's name, I think. (Something like that).

And, um, I love Shakespeare. Granted, Timon of Athens and a few others are crap, but his good stuff is fab.

So what do you think of poststructural criticism? (Along the lines of Jacques Derrida).

But, yeah, I'm not a fan of postmodern visual art.

I like Shakespeare...

But I do agree with you about a lot of post-modern art. If somebody flops some carpet samples on the floor and says it has something to do with the degradation of agriculture in africa, it doesn't make it so. As an art student it certainly pisses me off when somebody who makes something that takes no skill and even less thought gets more money for it than the sum of all my 4 years of tuition.

Art can be anything, I suppose, but you shouldn't get paid for it if you have no skill. It screws the rest of us over.
