I'm no good at writing poetry, but I wrote one about a jester once... Have to dig it up... For now, though, here's "Phenomenal Woman" by Maya Angelou.

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me. [/COLOR]

I wrote these some 35-years ago.

About a girl I knew:

Battle Of The Sexes

Lady in armor
With your shield at your breast
In your comfortable sorrow
Feathered in you nest
You want to be a lady
With your own devil to hide
So you mother your sweet boyfriends
Hold your feelings inside
And you hear their confessions
But your love's just a fake
In the end they just bore you
And you're left with your ache

I don't want to go back
To the shadowy night
To the depths falling deeper
No bottom in sight
But who's willing to climb
To the rarified air
To fight tooth and nail
Up the cold narrow stair
And where is the heat
To warm that cold place
Will there be no exhaustion
No sweat on our faces?

Perhaps I was wrong
When I thought you were strong
For the fight's not yet fought
And the victory's not won
Well, to the victor they say
Go the spoils of war
And the battle of the sexes
Began with a whore

Like an old man with a lamp
I keep wandering in youth
I keep looking for someone
To tell me the truth
But the Greek was a fool
When he sought for a man
It's a woman I seek
To hold by the hand

About myself:

Slingshot

Across the scruffy flat
Down the rocky bedrock stair
We're going 'round the country bend
To find him there
The tomboy chasers run
Scramble gaily in the sun
The old ones sit and play their game
The slingshot marksman takes his aim
Throws skipping stones

Mosquitoes bite
It's getting hot
The dragonflies all play
There are horny lizards by the brook
And hot-dogs on a tray
The old ones stop to fish
The marksman makes his wish
With his slingshot sense of something
He's a skipping stone

About gossips. This was basically about my mother's friends:

The Hive

Allegory buzzing now
With pollinated jive
Lazy workers regurgitate
Such sweet honey in the hive
Nurses gather up the germ
To feed the larvae by
Who hatch with sticky wings and join
The one faceted eye

Gossip 'round the quilting-bee
Sticking together

Hexagonal cubicles
Sticking together

Well, if we're going to go in that direction, here's one I liked from The Animaniacs "Dot's Poetry Corner":

Roses are red
Violets are blue
That's what they say
But it just isn't true

Roses are red
And apples are, too
But violets are violet
Violets aren't blue

An orange is orange
But Greeland's not green
A pinky's not pink
So what does it mean?

To call something blue when it's not
We defile it
But, ah, what the heck
It's hard to rhyme violet.

I once wrote an Ode to Pooping (and by once I mean a couple days ago)

This is a more serious poem I wrote, inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy

Limbo-

If home is where the heart is
let us open up a shelter
for my heart has no home,
no place to call its own

I am stuck between extremes
each having vice and virtue
but here holds all the bad
there is nothing to be had

I have not been granted
a belonging to a circle
because Limbo's where I'm at
and there's no place to hang your hat

Fair and balanced, in between
Never a chance nor a change
So here I sit in contemplation
saying "f*ck it" to moderation

Meh, I'm no poet, but I do try. Here's a limerick I wrote:

A tiger interviewed at the zoo
said, "There's one thing I'd sure love to do;
to eat up a guard,
which wouldn't be hard,
if the guard wasn't one that I knew."

Something I wrote many years ago. It's incomplete, I think... yet I don't know how it should continue. I always felt it was the start of a song.

I was yours and you were mine,
But the time has come for us to say goodbye.
Do you think if I let you go you could fly?

Ooo, I should go dig out some of my books, but I think most of them are in my old room at my dad's...
Kjesta - I got really into Maya Angelou when I was a teen, and I love that poem.
Fromper - yay, another Animaniacs fan
Good original poems on here too.

Quote:

Thanks. No, the only writing I've done lately has been on these boards. This is actually a pretty good place for getting things out of your system.

Agreed, I'm really enjoying how many active users and threads there are here. Much more to do here than on some of the other forums I'm a member of.
