Hi,

A few days ago I noticed my gum was swelling behind my lower back molar (I don't think I have my wisdom teeth yet.) Since then the swelling has spread to my cheek.

The swelling on the gum is going down but I still have a swollen cheek.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to treat this in a vegan-friendy way? I read that the first thing dentists prescribe is antibiotics, but I doubt they're vegan?

Thanks alot!

I had an abscess about 10 years ago. The pain was unbearable (top five worst pains in my life). Don't worry about whether it is vegan or not. If your problem gets as bad as mine was, you won't care about whether it is vegan or not.

Get it fixed before it gets any worse. The sooner, the better.

Are there any animal-free antibiotics?

There is this list but I can't see any antibiotics: http://www.vegansociety.com/healthca...ions-list.aspx

This is a life threatening situation. The last thing you should be doing is worrying about whether of not the antibioitics are vegan. Go to a dentist or doctor right away.

Take the antibiotics, please. An alive vegan is way more effective than a dead vegan.
An infection in your tooth is no different from an infection in your leg or your finger. Eventually it will spread to the rest of your body.

Your dentist cannot clean out the tooth without backing it up with oral antibiotics, to ensure it doesn't spread. I hate to inform you- most dental materials and resins are not vegan either. But you will need it fixed- please go.

For the love of God go to the dentist. I have a friend in Billings, MT who is a Christian Scientist and ignored an absessed tooth because he believed the Lord would heal him. Well that didn't work out so well because he now looks like the Elephant Man and is horribly disfigured. Just go to the friggin dentist and have it taken care of. Really.

Let me tell you a story about the man who gave me love, and is my favorite human being on the planet.

I am talking about my dad, obviously, and I love him more than any other being on this earth, and always will.

My dad had bad dentist work done about ten years ago, and hasn't gone back since. He has brushed his teeth every day, flosses, and rinses with mouth wash. My dad has an abscess in his mouth (you can see it just behind his ear), and has lost about 10 teeth, however the rotting roots are still inside, poisoning him and slowly killing him. My father is dying basically because now, the cost to fix his mouth is $30,000-$50,000. It kills me to see him in pain ALL THE TIME because he didn't go to the dentist when he should have to fix what the last dentist did.

Don't be a ****ing moron, and go to the dentist.

If the stories here aren't enought to scare you into going to the dentist, I have two words for you: brain abscess.

Nothing is quite as sad as watching someone in pain over dental work. My dad can't bend over anymore because the blood that rushes to his head inflames his teeth and he falls over. It makes me want to cry, but there is literally nothing we can do about it now.

Also, oral infections can spread to the brain. Six or seven years ago my mom got an abscess and she wouldn't go to the dentist when it first started because she didn't have the money. I sent her the money and she spent it on something else instead. It got way worse and it spread to her eye and she wound up in the hospital for a week. The doctors were very worried that it would spread to her brain before they could get the infection under control but she got really lucky and it didn't get that far.

I hate animal testing and the fact that modern medicine is very non-vegan so I try to take the best care of myself as I can to avoid having to use modern medicine, but when I do need to go to the doctor for something I do it. My immune system is pretty messed up from a genetic health problem that I have and my immune function at the skin level and around my nose/mouth doesn't work properly and I have trouble with infections sometimes. I take the antibiotics when I need to because it sure beats winding up in the hospital or dead.

Almeria is not wrong. Tooth infections can spread to the brain and wreak all kinds of havoc.

And I keep thinking about it being right before a holiday weekend.

Pretty much all dentists (in the US) are required to do a rotation in the ER during their year of residency. So if the dentist office is closed on the holiday weekend you can definitely get care at your local ER
