I thought we could have a thread where we share our good eating out stories <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)"> Occasionally, I'll go somewhere and the staff will try extra-hard to accommodate my dietary requirements... really makes up for the times you get the response "ve... gan? Do you eat fish?"<br><br>
Like yesterday, I went out for a family meal. We went to a typical pub food kind of place. I called in advance and asked about vegan food, and they said that although there was nothing on the menu, they'd make something special for me. They pointed out everything on the menu that they could modify, and told me that they would cook everything in a designated area of the kitchen with separate utensils. Unfortunately, the main course wasn't that great; the butternut squash was undercooked so it was REALLY hard and difficult to eat. But when it came to the pudding, they gave me the ingredients lists for every pudding so I could make sure that whatever I ordered didn't contain some funny ingredient. I had a summer pudding without the cream and it was DELICIOUS <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">

An Indian food restaurant is right around the corner and has a large vegetarian menu, the food is amazing and we asked the very friendly chef if it was possible to make the dishes w/o dairy. he makes me vegan indian food almost everyweek AND delivers it to my house! it is great!!!

I had to travel, and was stuck in a hotel that offered "free food" in the form of chicken fingers and pizza. Most of the restaurants were animal-themed... Steakhouses, Seafood, etc... There was a La Fiesta nearby, and I walked there.<br><br>
Looking at the menu, I was very disappointed. The menu was different from the La Fiesta I live near, and all of the items had meat. ALL OF THEM!<br><br>
I put the menu down, and asked the waitress if there was any way they could whip together a bean burrito (assuming the beans had no lard), and maybe some pico de gallo w/ chips. I explained that I was very hungry, and had no place else to go for food. (I actually hadn't eaten all day...I was flying) She left to talk to the cook. She returned, and said it would be fine.<br><br>
My meal was fabulous! The cook grilled onions, tomatoes, and bell peppers to put on top of the beans, and the whole thing was smothered in this freshly made mushroom-tomato gravy! The pico de gallo was very fresh, and there were a variety of fresh veggies surrounding the plate!<br><br>
The total only came to $7.50 for all that food! I left a $10 tip!

another recommendation for an Indian Restaurant called the Minar locally. There is one main waiter, when we go in for lunch, who will take me though all of the foods on the buffet, and tell me which ones have dairy in them...or really, which ones don't, so I can have them. Then he asks the cook to make me naan ( I think) without the ghee on top, and makes me spinach saag without the milk in it too.....<br><br>
We LOVE eating there! It's one of our favorite places to eat of all times!<br><br>
Funny story, my hubby went there without me a little later than lunch time, ( I had gone to wk already) and that same man asked him if I was ok, because I wasn't with him that day....now that is cool, I thought! Won't get that at McD's!

The Casey's close to where I live made me a custom vegan pasta loaded with delicious veggies and charged me for the cheapest pasta on the menu cause there was no meat in it. It's a rarity for people in this city to not say "Do you eat fish?"

I've had the same experience with Indian places. They seem very accommodating.

i've had a very delicious vegan meal at red lobster. they made me grilled asparagus, red bell pepper, onions (forgot to mention i don't eat them), as well as those little potatoes cut very fancy, and a mushroom rice pilaf that was amazing. and i had a salad. i came there expecting to eat nothing more than a side of steamed veggies but they were very accommodating.<br><br>
another place i went to sent out the manager to talk about which menu items were appropriate <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">

WTF? Red Lobster?<br>
It's been years since I've set food in one, I've always just assumed there'd be nothing for a vegan to eat in there. I have to travel a lot, and I'd like to know... Were these things you spotted on the menu and made substitutions?

I find most Indian restaurants are very accommodating and can offer a wide variety of vegan selections from their menu. Sushi Bars also offer many non-fish vegan selections which are quite tasty.

i know, totally unexpected. i was going with a person who had been very good with picking veg friendly places but loves that restaurant so i was paying back the favour. anyway, i ended up asking the waiter to help me pick from the menu (the limited side dishes mostly) and he came back saying they'd make me something special without anything i couldn't eat. except for the asparagus, none of the stuff came directly from the menu

My Mom is vegetarian and she said red lobster went out of their way to make her a specialized meal as well. And this was in Canada.

Ugh, Red Lobster? I used to work there, and having that lobster tank in the front and seeing how they killed the lobsters in the kitchen was a major part of what planted the vegan seed in my head.<br><br>
I definitely agree with Indian restaurants and sushi places, and also there's a place in my town called Moe's that does some awesome burritos. I usually get mine on a whole wheat tortilla with black beans, guacamole, corn pico de gallo, guacamole, spinach, habanero, and salsa verde.

Oddly, one of my most positive restaurant experiences was at a STEAKHOUSE.<br><br>
It was my dad's birthday, and he wanted to go to this upscale steakhouse. I was worried about what I'd be able to eat. I explained to the waitress that I don't eat meat, dairy, or eggs. She had the chef prepare me this beautiful veggie platter with a special sauce. It was delicious.<br><br>
As for veg*n restaurants, we have quite a few in San Diego and they're all great <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">

I've had great experiences at Indian places and Japanese as well. I went out for Thai yesterday and the waiter was fantastic and double checked everything I ordered to make sure it was all vegan or would be able to be veganized. The whole meal was delicious. There's always a good selection of stuff at Lebanese/Middle Eastern restaurants I've been to. I also used to love going to Ruby Tuesday where I'd get a veggieburger (back when it was vegan and a regular item on their menu), no mayo/cheese, no butter on the whole wheat bun and a side of steamed veggies w/out butter. The staff was always great about double checking everything for me.

I am so disappointed the veggieburger is gone.....good thing the salad bar is as awesome as it is! We'll drive an hour and a half, just to go there, since there are none locally!

I had an AMAZING experience at Fleming's Steakhouse. I had to go for a drug rep dinner. Since it was a prix fixe menu, I just planned to eat on my way home. The rep noticed that I hadn't ordered and called attention to it.<br><br>
They ended up bringing me an incredible pasta and vegetable dish with a ginger soy sauce that absolutely rocked my world. The next day two of my friends said that they were still thinking about my dish.

One handy tip too is if you're with a group of friends who are ordering pizza, any of the major delivery chains will do a version of any of their pizzas without cheese, and they've been delicious so far!
