A man says he broke into an apartment with a cavalry sword because he thought he heard a woman being raped, but the sound actually was from a pornographic movie his upstairs neighbor was watching.

"Now I feel stupid," said James Van Iveren, who has been charged in the case. "This really is nothing, nothing but a mistake."

According to a criminal complaint, the neighbor told police that Van Iveren pounded on the door and kicked it open without warning Feb. 12, damaging the frame and lock.

"Where is she?" Van Iveren demanded, thrusting the sword at the neighbor, the complaint said. "Where is she?"

I think I want to have him as my neighbor. This would fall under the "good faith" or "good Samaritan" clause AFAIK.

OTOH, not just porn movies have women screaming. I tend to turn down the volume when people start shouting, though, so it doesn't bother my neighbors. If the other guy had his sound up full-blast, he was asking for it.

At least it's good to know that there are still some guys out there who are willing to take up their sword and valiantly (attempt) to rescue a damsel in distress.

I wonder if the person inside the apartment was uh, you know....when the guy burst in?

It's not like he intended to hurt anyone if no one was being harmed. I'll take a well-intended non-rescuer over an apathetic neighbor any day.

Wow. I hope the charges are dropped.

Sounds like he did a brave thing.
