'Tis the way of science, m'dear.

We will get used to it. Heck, I've had to throw out the window just about everything I learned about dinosaurs in school. That's how much more scientists have learned about dinosaurs in the last 40 years.

^^^In school we were taught the phrase "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas" to help us remember the positions of the planets. I thought it was universal but maybe it was just my town...

Um... I just remember them. I'm kind of sad that our solar system has been downsized. But after reading that aricle, it makes sense, considering the alternative is to allow a whole myriad of other icy rocks that are being discovered with newer technology to be considered planets as well.

OK, I lied. I learned a little song. But all the song does is repeat the names of the planets to a certain rhythm:

Mercury, Venus, Earth, a-and Mars,

Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus,

Neptune, Pluto,

They're the wandering stars.

Taking Pluto out is really going to screw up the song, because that line is supposed to be a certain number of syllables long.

Our Solar System has not been downsized at all... The Kuiper Belt is huge! Before, we did not really cover anything much beyond Pluto.

I think they should come up with a more interesting name than "dwarf planet."

I agree. Everytime I see "dwarf planet" I think of Red Dwarf.

The mnenomic device I used was, "My very educated mother just showed us nine planets". I think it is resonable that Pluto is not a planet, since if Pluto was considred a planet, many other trans-Neptunian objects shall be considred planets and there will be a lot of memorization with that, since there are a lot of trans-Neptunian objects in the Kuiper belt.

the old mnemonic device wasn't perfection even before the discovery of all these new trans neptunian objects because the order wasn't always accurate. Sometimes pluto is closer to the sun than neptune, sometimes not.

why not have more planets though? if sentimentality has a role then we could go back to Holst's sonorous eight planets or perhaps the poetic and multicultural classical five which is also compatible with the classical chinese elements. students are going to have to learn that sometimes textbooks are wrong.

Ewww, you made a mess! Unexplode your brain, Ceres and Pluto are both designated "dwarf planets," according to the chart with the article.
