The Lincoln County War

As most people know Lincoln County became famous when Billy the Kid was jailed for murder in the Lincoln County War.

100+ years later we still wage a war - this time on behalf of the domestic animal population.

The new director of the Humane Society is not in the least interested in animals. He is a businessman with a political agenda. And he is fairly ruthless. When he took over the Humane Society he PROMPTLY fired all of the original staff and replaced them with the most cold hearted people who ever walked the face of this earth. They have NO feelings for animals.

The County Manager isn't interested in animals either. Nor are two of the county commissioners. All ranchers they believe that a bullet is the answer to all of life's problems.

Up until Friday of last week the Humane Society and County worked in perfect harmony to give all animals advantages. We had a spay/neuter program. The county took all strays to the Humane Society which was virtually a no kill shelter until Adkins took it over in December.

But the continual fighting between 3 individuals who cannot stand the sight of each other, and who are determined to play one up man ship against each other, has resulted in chaos and devastation.

The Humane Society is now a kill shelter. They tell you different but when an animal goes in the front door it is likely to be leaving through the back door dead without any attempt to adopt.

This is now a business not an altruistic non-profit.

And the county ? Well, all animals found in the 400 square miles of Lincoln County are going to be transported to a location adjacent to the county jail. UNTRAINED INMATES are going to be their caretakers for a period of 3 days before they are killed.

From county meetings the suggestion I have heard ( but not verified ) is that they are going to be shot.

We now have the fox in the chicken coop on BOTH ends of the spectrum and no place for the animals to seek refuge.

We have lost our adoption program and spay/neuter program in one fell swoop because of three arrogant, bullheaded, morons.

I ask everyone to please contact the County manager and Humane Society and Chamber of Commerce and threaten to boycott Ski Apache, Ruidoso Downs Race track, Ruidoso and Old Lincoln if Adkins is not removed from the Humane Society and Tom Stewart, the County Manager and the other commissioners do NOT restore the program that has served us well for years.

This is excerpts from the Friday newspaper;

"Keith Adkins, executive director of the animal shelter operated by the Humane Society of Lincoln County, told councilors Tuesday that residents of areas without contracts with the shelter would no longer be eligible for the reduce cost spay and neuter vouchers, which would further increase the number of unwanted litters. Adkins cleared up a few points for the council, including that the society is not required to accept animals from areas not under contract."

"Inmates living at the annex instead of in jail would care for the

animals for the short time of their confinement. Sticking to state minimum requirements, those without identification will be killed after three days and those with, whose owners haven't responded, in five days.

"I've always thought it would be neat to pair the inmates and animals," Stewart said."

"Sterchi pointed out that commissioners are elected to represent the people in their districts, who apparently need the service provided by the shelter based on the numbers. He questioned if politics may be behind the negative attitude toward the humane society and the animals."
