Hi all! I live in Ontario Canada and was wondering....when is the best time to plant garlic? I know you are supposed to plant it in the fall and sometime before frost...so when is the optimal time to plant? I've never planted garlic before and I have a nice flowerbed to plant into now! Also, I heard you are supposed to mulch over top...what should I use for mulch? thanks! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">

Yes, now is perfect. I've never grown garlic, but I know most fall bulbs need like 10-16 weeks of cold before sprouting. Your mulch can be bark, straw, grass clipping, shredded newspaper, anything that is going to help the soil hold its moisture and protect the seedling/bulb when it begins to next year.

Okay, thanks everyone! I'm going to plant hopefully tomorrow or by the weekend. I'll try grass clippings or straw on top.

I live in an apt, so I want to grow garlic in pots. How big of a pot should I use? And I live in CO, is it too late to plant now? I have a black thumb so I'm nervous!

Unless you have a really big pot, your yield won't be a lot of garlic. Plant it at least 6 to 8 inches apart in loose soil a couple of inches deep.
