we are talking about life in a predominately vegetarian culture, VP, something none of us are familliar with, so it may seem ludicrous to you, but make perfect sense to the devout in india.

You need to understand vegetarianism within the context of Indian society. Meat-eating is extremely offensive to a major section of the population. Although meat-eating is not illegal per se, it is often illegal to offend religious sensibilities and social norms by surreptitiously placing non-veg items in a vegetarian dish. This is the kind of action that often leads to religious rioting between two certain sections of the society.

I do understand, I just don't care what the sensibilities are. Jailing someone for a incorrecty made dish is stupid. If the person involved is offended by eating meat, I would suggest they avoid restaurants that serve it in the future.

I also find that it is illegal to offend religious sensibilities stupid, and that goes for similar laws in the US.

Ditto for religious rioting.

Allegedly done maliciously. Sounds to me like some sissy was mad because they didn't kiss his ass apologizing.

Even if it was done maliciously, jailing someone for non-violently offending religious "sensibilities is well...stupid.

I agree, the poor waiter shouldn't be in jail, even if he was a jerk about it afterwards.

My friends from India don't seem to think this sounds very normal. I dont think that a person should be jailed for offending religious "sensibilities" as people have been calling them. If I were to walk around in Kansas with a Bad Religion shirt on (a cross with a great big "no" circle/crossout on top of it) i sure better hope I'm not going to jail for offended someone. Thats just stupid. Go after them for $$ damages and a public apology, not criminal charges.

If someone puts seafood in my husbands food on PURPOSE, though (severe allergic reaction - and I ALWAYS specify it, and wave around an epi-pen) you can bet they will be hearing from me - and potentially spending time in jail for attempted murder.

Besides, if they think it's funny serving up chicken unrequested, maybe it'd be dog **** or a tampon next time.

Well when you go out to it your relying on trusting what they serve you, what they serve you is mostly there choice, it is there restaraunt

Absolutely not. I pay for what I order. A restaurant is a service industry and the needs of the customers (within reason) should be high on their list of priorities.

He did not order or pay for chicken, he should not have been served chicken. What if he was allergic to it like your husband is allergic to seafood? What if the allergy was so severe that the person sufered a serious reaction or died? Criminal charges should be filed in that case, even if it was an accident. I think its great that one of the employees is facing charges but I think the other responsible employees like the manager and cook on duty and Pizza Hut Corp should face criminal charges as well.

Sending someone to jail for that is ridiculous. What if it were a vegetarian waiter that left the meat off the plate... would people want the waiter to still go to jail. That's a bit extreme.

You'd let a liberal's comments offend you? That's surprising to me.

I agree that jail is absurd, but your analogy didn't work. You can't use an analogy and accept it as fact if the situations aren't similar.

So if I had a restaurant, and served you poisoned baby-meat, that would be OK? After all, it is my restaurant.

That was a joke Mike. I was making fun of how so many people feel that I offend them when I give an opinion that doesn't match theirs. I have a pretty thick skin and it takes a lot to really offend me.

Quote:

The point with my analogy is that many people seem to think it was okay that the person was jailed. I wondered if the script was flipped how many people would still feel the same way... you know- switch the places of the vegetarian and meat eater and the serving situation. I bet people would be saying "two thumbs up for not serving that meat he ordered" or something like that. I doubt they would be saying it was a good idea that the vegetarian go to jail for not including the meat on the plate. Get it?

No, I don't get it. Your analogy didn't work. A vegetarian does not eat meat, an omnivore does eat vegetables (or whatever else would be on the plate.)

If you gave an analogy of serving pepper to someone allergic to pepper, or someone serving unkosher food to an Orthodox Jew, then it would be different seeing that someone allergic to pepper can't have pepper and an Orthodox Jew does not eat unkosher food.
