Not sure if this has been talked about already, I'm fairly new to this site, but when I was ordering a veggie bowl from Chipotle today and asked for pinto beans, they informed me that those beans are prepared with bacon.
(Just the pintos, not the black beans)
I think if I wouldn't have said "veggie bowl" and just put together a bowl with non-meat items they would not have warned me first. Did I miss the sign somewhere?

Places won't usually have a sign. If you are new to vegetarianism, you will soon learn which dishes sometimes have bacon or animal fat in them and to ask. This includes pinto beans and any vegetable served at a southern style restaurant.

I would not have known but I worked at one for a few months years ago. They are supposed to tell you just some workers do not think about it.

My husband used to wonder why I always asked what was in everything even when it stated that it was veg*n until he became veg*n himself 3 months ago.

He soon learned first hand how often chicken stock, lard, bacon fat etc are added to what one expects to be veg*n.

Definitely something to keep in mind now. I hadn't thought about the chicken stock and lard but you're right.

The vegetarian items are automatically supposed to come with black beans, the workers shouldn't be offering the pinto. What's awesome is Chipotle is really veg friendly and the employees know the food enough to answer the questions. The sour cream is gelatin free and the cheese is rennet free. All of the salsas and the guacamole are vegan.

Would you like me to type up a brief cheat sheet of common ingredients to check for and where they commonly are?

What I love about Chipotle is that their website is very specific. If you are vegetarian, don't eat this, this, or this. If you are vegan, don't eat this or this either. How much easier can it get? I always research online before I go out to eat, and then if I'm not sure, I ask the servers questions. Sometimes they don't know and have to ask the cook, but it gives you a peace of mind. Good luck!

I've been to a ton of different Chipotle locations and they're always pretty good about automatically giving you black beans.

Yes, this has been discussed before.

After the last discussion, I went through Kroger and examined their canned pinto beans. They had eight different varieties of canned pinto beans. Four had meat, and four did not. The "Mexican" varieties were meatless, the "Southern" varieties almost always had meat.

So it seems that pinto beans do not always have meat, but fairly often do.

Yep, most of the employees know not to offer the pinto beans if you order vegetarian anything. However, I did have one offer me either a couple weeks ago. I don't trust beans, soup bases, or as someone else said ANYTHING in a southern restaurant without checking into it first. I don't even live in the deep south but there a couple places here that coat baked potatoes in bacon grease.

Is the guacamole prepared fresh there?
