Channel 4 in the UK will tonight show two pigs being slaughtered on the programme the F-Word. It even features hard-man chef Gordon Ramsey, owner of the two pigs, close to tears. PETA, and others, I'm sure, hope the programme will turn scores of people vegetarian overnight, so veggie restaurants around the country should stock up in anticipation!

I was wondering if Gordon would be able to go through with it. Hopefully something good will come out of this and he'll rethink his anti-veg POV, he already has a bit.

London's "Independent" has an interesting piece today, Wednesday August 9, headed, "Ramsay reduced to tears as pigs go under knife."

( Pg. 14)

It opens:

"Gordon Ramsay's reputation as the tough guy of British cuisine will be severely dented tonight, following Channel 4's decision to screen footage of his pet pigs being taken to the abattoir.

"Viewers of The F-Word will see Ramsay moved almost to tears, as he watches the Berkshire sows, Trinny and Susannah, go under the slaughterman's knife.

"Looking pale and shaken, the Glaswegian chef sees the 24-month-old pigs stunned by an electric shock to the brain, before being shackled by the hind legs and hoisted to the ceiling. Their throats are then unceremoniously slit.

"Ramsay's grisly ordeal does not end there. During the sequence - which will go out after the 9pm watershed - the dead pigs begin "gurgling" as blood pours out of their bodies, and kicking due to an apparent nervous reaction.

"He then watches as the bodies of Trinny and Susannah - named after the television fashion gurus Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine - are put into a scalding tank. They are later shaved and disembowelled, and hung in a meat store."

Ramsay will be serving the pigs to diners next week.

PETA comments:

"Paul McCartney once said that if slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian. If The F-Word slaughter turns out to be as graphic and gory as we hear it is, then these animals' deaths will not have been completely in vain, since they will turn many compassionate people into vegetarians."

A Channel 4 spokeswoman comments:

"It's always been explicitly stated throughout the series that Trinny and Susannah are being reared for consumption. A lot of people are in denial about how products arrive on the shelf, and the conditions of farm animals, and one of the points of the series is to show how that happens. Gordon has always tried to give them the best life, and believes in using animals from sensitively-sourced farms."

It presents a great opportunity for letters to the editor on the conditions in which most animals to be used for food are raised (see www.factoryfarming.com) and/or questioning the need to eat them.

I would hope that. But I'm apprehensive that it will desensitize people, more likely. For all Gordon Ramsey's supposed distress during the slaughter, he knew that these two hogs were being raised for food and would be killed, and he went through with it.

Well, I watched it. Gordon was very upset, when their throats had been slit and they were still moving and making noise he got a bit panicky and started asking why they were doing that, and didn't seem happy even when he was told it was just nerves.

The rest of the show...Janet Street Porter advertising veal - "Most people who don't eat veal are just ignorant"

I've been watching this show for a while now, and Gordon's been showing reluctance about the slaughter for a while and admitted he was too attached to the pigs. I think the sight of him nearly crying over them was worse than the slaughter itself.

People only saw these pigs reared in his backgarden though, they probably won't think about the factory farms the majority of them buy their meat from.

I saw it, and i actually have some respect for him now. He reared them in his garden, and grew really attached to them. Tonight he went to the abertoire and watched them be slaughtered, and you could clearly see that it was an emotional experience for him. He just went bright red, looked a bit teary eyed, and afterwards admitted it was a hard thing for him to do. The thing is, those pigs led a great life in comparison to factory farmed pigs, and for a lot of people, that's their main problem with the meat industry.. it's not the fact that the animals are killed for meat. So whilst i'd obviously rather he'd decided to save them, i'm glad they lived a happy life beforehand, and i'm glad Gordon wasn't ignorant about where the meat comes from.

Also on the show though, i didn't like how Janet Street-Porter was trying to convince the nation to eat veal. However, i was suprised to hear that veal crates were banned in the UK 16 years ago... which i didn't know, and apparantly veal in the UK is rose veal (unless it's been imported), rather than white veal, and the calves live for about 7 months i think. I still don't condone it though.

Watching JSP made me feel sick. She was pretty much saying that because they were no longer kept in crates people were stupid for not eating veal. And I don't think the cows care that they were graciously given a couple more months before being slaughtered. Although I think other meat is no better than veal, seeing someone campaign for a meat which has thankfully lost popularity was a bit too much.

This is the case. Hopefully the UK and EU trade ministers will eventually call for a rightful ban on the importation of animal agricultural products which don't derive from operations that meet the Union's published welfare standards.

The Europe-wide ban on veal crates starts next year, so hopefully that'll make importing more difficult?

He's an actor, playing the script, presented by Channel 4 as the "caring victim".The real victims are the individual pigs,he dominated and forced into the slaughterhouse, for his palate and his uneducated compassionless family.

My sentiments exactly! Crying or not, he's still betrayed these creatures who have loved and trusted him. I hope he has a grand time living with that.

This whole thing is horrifying beyond words.
