So I have two questions pertaining to my piercings. I would ask my piercer but I have to work today and then I'm going to be out of town all week so I won't get the chance to see him. I figured maybe some of you guys might know what's going on/how to fix it.

First of all, I have a lip piercing (done in November) and a nipple piercing (done in March). I've had a lot of trouble with my lip piercing, but since I switched to bioflex instead of steel or titanium my lip has stopped getting infected and was great up until a couple weeks ago. For about a week, however, I have been getting sharp, shooting pains from my piercing up to about the middle of my cheek. It only lasts for a couple seconds at a time, but its terrible and it hurts like hell. I've had plenty of infections with this thing when I used metal rings, but they were never like this and they usually cleared up pretty quickly once I started using antibiotic ointments and stuff (per the advice of my piercer). I suppose my question is if anyone else has had something similar to this and what I might do about it within the next week until I get a chance to see my piercer.
Second, my nipple piercing healed pretty well and after the first couple weeks I had no problems with it. It had stopped oozing lymph and it felt fine (I could rotate it and clean it without hurting it). Now, though, it's started hurting a TON since like 3 weeks ago, and it oozes lymph more often. It's nothing excruciating and normally I wouldn't be concerned about it if it weren't for the fact that it had been just fine for over a month. So does it seem like this could be a problem or is it just a semi-extreme cause of "it gets worse before it gets better" (I know with my friends monroe it hurt, got better, and then was excruciating for about a week before it healed).

Thanks! Sorry for the kind of tl;dr post! =/

Why have you changed the jewelry already? Did you care for them properly? I quit smoking to pierce my lip and cheek (& ears) with my own professional equipment. I've never had a problem, I washed my hands before touching the piercing to turn as well as the skin around the piercing with antibacterial soap and used antiseptic mouth wash anytime anything other than water hit my mouth.

Never had a problem with my eyebrow either (that was done by someone at a piercing parlor).

I had a similar problem with my septum. I asked a doctor at the hospital I worked at what the deal was, and he said that if we were meant to have metal through our skin, we'd have metal through our skin. I ended up taking it out because the pain was just not worth it.

Well if my nipples were oozing and painful because of a piercing I would just take it out. I've only had my eyebrow pierced so I don't know much about other piercings but I do know that I enjoy not having funky goo come out of my nipples.

Maybe I'm overreacting but I say take it out and don't risk the nipple infection spreading and causing boob damage. (I have no idea if this is even a possible scenario but just the thought of it would be enough to convince me to ditch the piercing. )

i would find another reputable piercer and have him take a look and tell you if you should do anything before your piercer gets back. it might cost you a few dollars.
maybe it's not a piercing you're meant to have. when i got a surface bar over my ribs it was nothing but trouble from the start even though i've never had issues with any other piercing

Quote:

you're not always supposed to take out an infected piercing

An infected piercing can cause a lot of problems, get medical attention or go to a different piercing studio and ask the piercer what you should do.
Until then treat it like a fresh piercing - do not change it, soak it in sea salt and warm water for two minutes twice a day. do not touch your piercing. When you shower wash the piercing last and make sure you rinse it clean of all soap.
Also create a solution of mouthwash and water and carry it with you, rinse your mouth after every meal and cig.

Yes. It needs to drain, if you take it out it'll close up and the infection will fester within.

Edit:They REALLY should have told you that before you got it.

Okay, so in an attempt to respond to everyone all at once.
I haven't changed the nipple ring, and I don't think it's infected because it's supposed to leak lymph and be kind of sore for a few months afterwards, I was just curious about why it stopped hurting and then started again.
Again, it's nothing problematic, it's just a mild irritant (in both cases), so I'm not too worried about it, I was just wondering if anyone else had dealt with something like this before.
My lip piercing has been fine for months, ever since I switched to bioflex.

I'm definitely aware that I'm not supposed to take it out. About a month and 1/2 after I got it pierced I had to take it out for like 10 minutes, the back of it healed over it, ended up with a pocket of pus inside it, so I had my piercer get rid of the pus and reopen it.

I appreciate the input guys =D

Oh wow I would have never thought about that but it makes total sense. I was never informed about any of this when I got my eyebrow pierced but then again that was over 10 yrs ago

I've had close to twenty piercings but I'm down to 8 and all the ones I have taken out will heal with scar tissue that resembles puss. But some of my piercings were self done (I was an idiot) so they might not have been done 100% right.

Hey, we have a whole thread dedicated to piercing Q&A's, pics, and the like!

To the OP, I've had both my nipples pierced for 5 or so years and the barbells get gunk on them once in a while. I just wash around them in the shower and they're fine. I've had my lip pierced for 6 years now, and its never bothered me.

Anything that is painful, red and inflamed is most likely infected. (duh)
