Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Some animals died in the flooding this week, trapped inside a pet store.
Story

I am in this area for school and actually lived in an apartment house that was flooded (now living in temp. housing) and this pisses me off! Given, I too was kind of blind-sided by the flood (I don't think anybody truly knew it was going to be THIS bad) but there was time between the evacuations & flooding to get these animals out.

I overheard a woman talking at Walmart saying that she knew neighbors who left their pets in the house when they were evacuated and how she didn't understand because she packed her pets up first since they're living beings etc. I don't understand how people just leave animals behind... The shelter said "no pets" but tons of people had pets with them & the shelter people didn't turn them away.... some people just even left pets in the car at least safer than a house with no place to go..... end of my rant...

There's been some Fb and Reddit chatter regarding employees being prevented from evacuating those animals to their own homes ...

/not saying it's true; not saying it isn't

My bf said the paper said 100ish animals died.
Apparently when he was working he said he got phone calls from staff there about going to get the animals but they didn't think there would be this much flooding even though this happened severed years ago...

This upsets me also and they knew there was a flood coming or rains, they should've prepared for it long before it got worse. I think its upsetting that this many animals died.

Thousands of people in my community are upset about the fact that Petco is attempting to place the blame on Johnson City officials. For Petco to claim that they had no idea that there was a danger of flooding is ludicrous.

The entire area where the store is was under water in the flood of 2006 and every local TV, radio and newspaper was warning people about this. People were told fairly early on Wednesday that if they flooded in '06 they would flood again.

Another local pet shop that is NOT owned by Petco was able to evacuate their animals. The Broome County Humane Society was able to evacuate their animals. There was plenty of advanced waring and their is no reason why Petco couldn't have gotten their animals out too.

If you choose to sell live animals then your are responsible for their care and safety.
