I don't always agree with their publicity campaigns, but I am a proud member and I do support them.

If you do a search on PETA, you will come up with a TON of other threads asking your question.

Their heart is in the right place, but I think they go overboard. Sometimes I think their tactics alienate people more often than they change people's thinking. I think the average omni would come across a compaign or demonstration of there's and think "What's wrong with these people?" instead of "You know, maybe baby cows shouldn't be kept in tiny wood crates!"

Well they were effective in getting me to watch videos at KFCCruelty.com and did the trick since I watched all the other videos too.

There were protesters outside KFC one day holding up signs while I was driving bye off Colorado Blvd & Alameda Blvd in Denver Colorado. However, the word PETA means something negative to the majority of people now. I don't even tell people I am a vegan because of what people associate with the word.

I would like to thank PETA for showing me the truth. I am not so sure many other people want to know the truth but I am thankful for it!

When I campaign I never mention them and deny any association with them. The damn kids over there seem to think tagging the crap out of

everything is somehow going to be productive and I find it to be extremely counterproductive when talking face to face to a restaurant owner/general manager who has had to pay his custodial staff extra to return his walls/tables/menus to their original condition.

They're embarassing to be honest.

PETA videos were really informative and helped get me to go vegetarian. They really showed me how amazing animals are and how horrible they are treated by the meat industry.

However, I think the tofu-wrestling they do objectifies women and I don't approve. But hey, sex sells, and unfortunately, people are buying.

I prefer to keep my distance from them. They are an anti-democratic organization prepared to trample on other values allegedly to attain their goals.

As I wrote on this topic back in 2002:

Quote:

PeTA does some good things and some bad things.

I had never heard of PeTA until well after I had become a vegetarian.

The bad things that PeTA does outweigh the good in terms of my even thinking of joining them or sending them any of my money.

However, they have contacted me and I have cooperated with them on particular projects that I considered worthwhile and constructive.

Much of their approach involves sexuality in such a way that (in my opinion) a reasonable woman could easily find it sexist and offensive. Since it would probably offend a majority of women, and since the majority of members of my EarthSave chapter are women, I just don't see any benefit to my group in any closer affiliation with PeTA, and no one in my group has asked for or suggested any such thing.

I mentioned this before...their hearts are in the right place, but we (vegans/vegetarians) already know most of the horric things happening to animals in slaughterhouses. The general public who already looks like at us like we are friken crazy becuase we eat a plant based diet, are totally turned off by PETA.

I have not met ONE SINGLE omni who said anything positive about PETA. THESE are the people they need to get to believe. This is so unfortunate because they are so educated on the issue. If they can 'cool their jets' and protest with tact and respect our wishes would be met very quickly. But becasue they are SO stuborn n thier beliefs and will probably never back down from being the 'tough guy', we will have to continue to wait a little while longer to take over the world

Again, if you are reading this and are a PETA representitive..maybe the Farn Sanctuary approach would work much better. According to my thread, 'Farm Sanctuary or PETA', this may be true. Be respectful and you will get respect back

One thing I really like about PETA is that they definetely aren't in it for the money. Unlike most other similar organizations, their staff are paid moderate salaries. They also do not copyright any of their material and encourage people to copy and give away anything they produce.

They do do a lot of good things.

But, the bad outweighs the good for me (treatment of companion animals, support for BSL, misogynst campaigns, etc), so I don't financially support them any longer.

kpickell, I tried looking it up but I couldn't find it. To me BSL means british sign language! what does it mean in this context?
