slightly girly question but not entirely for the 'female' section so here goes..

so..tonight, the return..of the monthly. and yet my 'target weight' is apparently a lot higher. does that mean if i continue to eat plenty of calories but not enough to gain more weight, that im healthy enough?

im 165cm and currently weight 47kgs. (with very little muscle, so that accounts for some of it)

anybody know?? i must be eating plenty of the right things to have it return, so..why would i need to gain more? isn't the 'bad bit' of being underweight being infertile? which im now not?

I think you probably know this: being infertile isn't the only bad bit of being underweight.

Also, some people still have periods even when they're at a v. low (and unhealthy) weight.

Lack/presence of periods isn't really a good indicator of whether you are a a healthy weight.

I'm gonna leave it to other people to reply now, because i'm being incredibly hypocritical right now lol!

you can still be underweight and have a period. and raddish is right in her advice. you still need to gain weight. i'm sorry, i know it isn't what you want to hear, but you have not gained enough weight to be fully healthy and gaining weight isn't all that you need to work for to be healthy. Part of being healthy is not obsessing over the food you eat or the weight you are..

Getting your period back is probably a good sign of getting closer to a healthy weight but it doesn't mean you're there yet. Keep working at it. It sounds like you're making progress.

sorry but periods aren't really a good sign of being a healthy weight.

some people manage to get them even when they are extremely underweight.

also having one does not necessarily mean that you are going to get another or continue to have them regularly - it could just be a one off.

bodies are like that, very unpredictable lol

take care

you're not quite there yet but i'm sure you can get there in time

i AM! although this is really throwing a spanner in the works when it comes to intuitive eating. I've been doing that for a while and going well!! but suddenly 'intuitive eating' means eating more than i know i should and i don't think thats a good thing so DAMNIT now im all confused all over again. i liked eating what i wanted when i wanted..when it wasn't an abnormally large amount. sigh.

If you go back to eating whatever and whenever your heart desires, I'm willing to bet that you won't eat too much. Your idea of "abnormally large" quantities of food is probably way off.

Eat when you get hungry. Enjoy food. Enjoy life. veggiejanie, thank you so much. truly. thank you. i don't mean to sound petty, im just frustrated that it was all feeling so ok and so good and right now i feel really out of control. and i will if i don't eat what im craving (thats really the only word, coz i can't be actually hungry? i dont think my stomach is. i dont even KNOW.). but i will if i dont, too.

everything was so..ok. sigh. i dont know what im doing today. aaaa.

and i have assignments due and have done nothing on them today because this is becoming a distraction. lol

You're welcome!

I go through the same thing sometimes, too, like wondering if I'm just having a craving (for chocolate, chips, etc) or if my body is really hungry and needs food. I can understand where you are coming from. If you're ever confused and don't know what your body is telling you - just listen to it and understand that it's hungry, whether or not it's just a craving. It's good to give into cravings, as long as you keep it under control. Let's say you are craving some chocolate - okay, let yourself have some! But make a promise to yourself that you won't go crazy and eat 5 candy bars, but maybe 1 instead. Or if you want some potato chips or any other kind of snack, don't eat the entire bag, but let yourself have a handful or two. It may sound difficult, but by listening to your body and practicing control, you will get the hang of it and won't have to worry about your portions. It will all come naturally.

Remember that you are in control of yourself. You are the only one who is responsible for your health and happiness. It's okay to give into cravings, like I said, just keep it under control. Then you know that you aren't hurting yourself. Besides, what you are feeling may not be cravings, and instead it may be your body telling you, "Feed me! Feed me!" You may not be feeding your body enough of the nutrients it needs. So be nice to your body and take care of yourself. Feed yourself. Nourish yourself. Try your best not to feel guilty, but rather feel good about listening to your body. Ignore those feelings that tell you it's wrong to eat and be free. Your body wants you to be free, and so do you.

Please PM me if you ever want to talk or if you need help. I see your threads every once in awhile and I really feel for you. I'd like to see you get back on the right track and be free.

hmm. very wise advice. so wise. you guys blow me away , seriously!! i haven't eaten much 'junk' despite the urge to. infact, less junk than in my 'trying to be relaxed' week, because i don't want to make suprisingly bad cramps worse. it just unnerves me that its 11 30am and ive probably had more calories than i had by 4pm yesterday. eheh. plus im supposed to have dinner with a housemate and am meant to prove i can eat relaxed-ly. but tonight i really dont WANT salty crap or whatever she's going to order because i already feel kinda off.

and its more the fact that normally im stuffed . but im just..not.

today ive had..

2 wholegrain wheat bricks ( a step up from the lower calorie higher protein less natural bread i used to have for breakfast every morning.) and half a cup of plain biodynamic yogurt (i hate dairy, but giving this a whirl. just this.) and black coffee.

a huge green apple

the biggest muffin ive ever seen. vegan, sugar free (although lots of fruit juice im sure...but i dont worry about that these days. ive had a lot of chocolate this week and it was heaven!) orange and poppyseed.

about half a cup of raw pumpkin seeds. or maybe not that much. i actually have no idea. i dont eat them because they're hard to know how many ive had. but i thought 'hey, protein source, magnesium source, fat source' and had some today regardless. to try and squash the odd dairy urge for cheese (which i don't really like).

a zucchini with tomato pasta sauce as dip (we were out of hommus)

and a few mushrooms.

this doesn't all seem weird but its like..i have a pattern . and i normally follow it. and this isn't following it at all. i might be hungry later. i might...i ...oh just so many mights involved in ditching patterns and being random.

i swear ive had more than that. i just can't remember now. how strange...

wanted more of the wheat thingoes..with cinnamon. or soy milk something or other. or brown rice. but im just waiting..til i know whats what.

This is really strange to suggest.. 'cause it's already driving me nuts.

But do you have a therapist? Either way, could you follow a healthy meal plan (flexible enough to let you eat things you like) until you're back on track? Mine has me eating more than rabbit food again, so hey.
