I just got a few sprigs of peppermint, and planned to root them and add this herb to my garden. I like mint tea, and sometimes I chew on a few leaves for a breath freshener.

I don't have problems with mice or rats in or around my house, but had heard that they don't like peppermint (or more precisely, the more potent peppermint oil). Recently I read (on-line) that it can make cats sick. Does anyone else know if that's true? I can keep my cat away from it because she's indoors-only, but I don't want to make the neighborhood cats ill...

This is what the ASPCA says: http://www.aspca.org/Pet-care/ask-th...rmint-oil.aspx

Interesting. I just brought in my spearmint plants for the winter. Catnip is mint too. It really sounds like they'd have to be ingesting peppermint OIL, not just casual experimentation with leaves. (That said, I can't imagine my cats eating large quantities of mint)

Thanks. It's a bit hard for me to imagine a cat eating enough peppermint plant to make him/herself sick, but I didn't know how much it would take. The oil, being more potent, would be another matter, but I would have thought the strong taste or odor would put a cat off. The again, my cat sometimes nuzzles my face right after I've brushed my teeth with a minty toothpaste...
