this is really just a rant...

You know the whole SARS thing that the media is having a hay-day about? I heard today that a business conference in Arizona banned ALL Canadians who were going to attend because they were afraid of getting SARS! Paranoid ignoramuses they are!

Ya, it would suck to get SARS, but does anyone else see that people just freak out way too much these days?

It's the same with the West Nile Virus. People here are freakin out and the government in Manitoba is spending millions of dollars to spray malathion over every part of the city, when no one was even confirmed to have WNV last year, and the chance of getting it is rare, and there are just as many other threats out there.

I know what some of you are thinking- better safe than sorry- but seriously, are we all going to end up living in bubbles some day??

Yup it's definetly getting out of hand. Here in Ottawa we just had 3 cases of flesh eating disease in the past week. Soon everyone's going to be freaking out about that. Apparenlty businesses in Toronto are really suffering because of this. Hotels, bars and restaurants are empty because of the paranoia.

They are also going to be spraying Ottawa for West Nile. You'd think they could find something better to spend our money on.

Oh well, c'est la vie I guess.

The news is always so depressing. Theres always some diaese going around that freaks everybody out. There is always the threat of 'the big one' (earthquake talk in CA) There is the threat of nuclear war. I've stopped watching it.

Considerinmg people are much more likely to get the flu and die, peopel shoudl die. If people have been exposed, they should be quarantined butother than that, people are being silly.

They sent a Canadian girl's soccer team back from a tournament in the States too. Everyone had been checked out for SARS and they were travelling with a doctor but as soon as they got to their destination they were told that no one would compete with them.

There's such a thing as being cautious but it's becoming a bit overdone.

But they don't have any problems with all of the Canadian NHL players coming into the states for the NHL playoffs, I suppose. I did hear a statistic on NPR yesterday: You're more likely to get in a car accident than contract SARS.

It's b/c everyone's so germaphobic anymore. One of my co-workers won't use the scrubby thing in the kitchen area to wash her dishes b/c she's afraid of catching something. I think over half the women in my building use a paper towel to flush the toilet and another paper towel to open the bathroom door. I can't even count how many people have hand sanitizer on their desks. One person cancelled a vacation to Canada b/c of fear of SARS. It's ridiculous.

These same people have no problem eating a steak or a Big Mac, though. Don't they know the meat is dirtier than the doorknob?!?

Has anyone checked out the SARS Conspiracy Theories?

For example, there's one theory SARS is a deliberately released synthetic bioweapon for "Them" to observe how we all react, as preparation for when "They" release "The Big One" that is meant to wipe out one-third to one-half of the world's human population.

People will get paranoid until the next big fear comes along.

Remember anthrax? Last time I checked, the person(s) responsible were still out there, yet I don't see too many people wearing gloves to open the mail anymore.

Or smallpox?

Killer Bees?

People are fickle, and have short-memories.

It'll blow over. They always do.

the sars thing is getting on my nerves too. the US are warning people not to travel to Canada, period. what's with that? there are a few isolated cases within hospitals, therefore the entire population must be contagious

and really, it's just a flu-like illness, unless you're very old, very young, or have a low immune system, this thing isn't gonna kill you

the canadian dollar's dropping again because of this. tourism's down, etc and conferences are all being cancelled. it's so stupid. we didn't freak out like that about the US after 9-11 did we? as i recall we were supportive and continued to travel to the US and back when we were allowed to

Damn it! I'm definitely going to get SARS now after the unfortunate hamster/thunderstorm incident from last spring.
