I've got a thread (see below) about my new pup being very ill. The vet feels that it might be parvo though we haven't got the blood test results back yet. does anyone have any experience of parvo - do any pups survive it? I'm so worried, my poor pup is so ill. Going to check again soon for blood test results.

It's serious and puppies get it more frequently than adult dogs, but with proper treatment they can survive. When I was a kid, we had a dog survive a bout with parvo.

If it is parvo, before you bring him home make sure you clean everywhere he was with bleach water including his dishes and toys. Pick up all the poop outside and I'd even spray the areas he went outside with bleach water.

Parvo is very serious but with excellent supportive care your pup can get through it. My now-10 year old dog got it when she was about 4 months old. We caught it very early though so that might have been a big bonus. The basic idea with treating parvo and having them survive is to keep them hydrated (the dr. will want to hospitalize so as to do i.v. drips and possibly sub cu fluids). You are basically dealing with viral diarrhea and the amount of bodily fluids they lose can result in an crisis real fast. The idea is to give them excellent supportive care while the virus runs its course. Good luck and keep us posted.

Zeus and Apollo got parvo at about 6 months. Apollo made it because we got him to the vet in time, Zeus didn't.

*positive puppy thoughts*

Where did you get the puppy? If it came from some place with other dogs, they will need to know. I hope the best for your puppy.

There are a lot of factors to look at if a pup is to survive parvo. Including immune status (yours was from a shelter and this is not known, a breedeer typically vaccinates mom prior to preg for high antibodies in the pups), age (the older the better) and severity of symptoms. I've seem some an death's door raly and survive and others linger on ok for a while then crash and burn. It's really a toss up for survival. Good luck with your little one.

Thanks everyone - turns out he just had a very bad tummy infection/virus, blood test came back negative for parvo. He has been home with us this week and is getting better every day.

happy to hear that, was afraid things had gone bad since you were quiet on the matter. Really glad to hear he is getting better!

I'm glad he was ok! We had a similar scare when our kittens were little and the vet pretty much told us they were going to die, thankfully they made it too.

Enjoy your little guy!

Sounds like your pup had a bout of the Corona Virus, a serious thing for pups too as they can become very dehydrated. Glad everything is OK.

I had an experience with Parvo many years ago, it seems that if the sick dogs or pups can make it to day 7 then they will recover as long as they were treated with IV, oral or rectal fluids to prevent dehydration.
