That's a tough one! Can you get away from the airport at all? It's very close to T&T Asian supermarket (corner of Riverside and Hunt Club), which sells containers of vegetarian sushi. As far as the actual airport, I think the closest thing to vegan would be a Harvey's veggie burger. Their patties are vegan, but I think the bun has some dairy products in it. That or Tim Horton's vegetable soup with a country bun. Their buns are vegan.

How is Peterborough for a vegan? I used to go to Trent...but I was an omni then...and it was centuries ago ;P

Sometimes I miss it, and then I come to my senses...I think I just miss my time as a uni student

Does anyone know anything about Beking's Farm near Ottawa? I read about their farm here: http://ottawafoodies.com/forum/2061?...285#post_20285 and I'm wondering if anyone has more information on the operation and whether it's substantially different from a regular commercial chicken laying farm?

On the same topic, does anyone have any leads on where to get eggs in Ottawa that are a little more cruelty-free?

google threw up this (which i bet you saw already): http://www.bekingseggs.com/web/media...r-farming.html

i'm not a chicken farm expert, but a barn just seems like a big cage. which is definately nicer than a teeny tiny wire cage... if you get along with the other chickens you're gonna bump into... but its still a cage.

if i wanted eggs that were as humane as possible, i'd look for very small scale producers with a few chickens running about in their backyards, sleeping in a comfy chickencoop at night, and getting to do all the natural behaviours chickens do- which isn't legal in urban ottawa... so it'd be something a bit more rural. if they were rescued battery hens, that'd be even better.

you could try looking for chicken fanciers groups... or maybe contacting some of the companies listed here: http://www.cog.ca/index.php?page=ott...eat_n_egg_prod

..... asking what sort of scale they produce on, whether chickens get access to outside areas, if you can come by and visit... etc. bear in mind that many of these people will be raising animals for slaughter as well, so you'd have to consider how you feel about that on an ethical level as well. complicated stuff. good luck.

FYI for Ottawa vegans: that new Indian restaurant at Billings Bridge, Tandori, has several vegan options! They have the ingredient booklet handy so you can check the ingredients. The channa masala (chickpea curry) is vegan, no milk or ghee! So is the saag paneer (spinach curry), if you ask them to leave out the paneer (cheese), which they keep separate. And the side of spicy potatoes that comes with the curry dishes is also vegan! And they have balsamic vinaigrette for the green salad! The food is very good there (I can't get enough of those potatoes), so I highly recommend this place! It's the first Indian food court restaurant I've ever seen, so I hope they do good business there!

mmmm indian food. North Bay is finally (!!!) getting an indian restaurant, on main street. it's not open yet so i dunno about vegan options yet. we also now have a lebanese place called Cedar Tree, also on main i think, which i've heard is really good and there's tons of vegetarian and vegan options, and a Vietnamese place on Marshall which i haven't scoped out yet. i'm curious about that one but i've never had Vietnamese so i don't know how vegan friendly it is, and i don't know if the owners and staff are Vietnamese or not so not sure if it's authentic or how well they speak english, i will pop in one of these days to get a takeout menu and see what i can find out.

it's exciting though, our little city is suddenly becoming much more multicultural

*dances around with glee at the possibility of being able to eat something other than fries at the mall for the first time ever*

have you see the list of restaurants on the veg.ca site? you're so spoiled for choice in TO!

alas, the only place i've really shopped is wholefoods (do not start spooning those cardboard boxes full with the weighed salads unless you have a bunch of money!)
and the big carrot (which has quite possibly the worlds best pakoras).

No I haven't seen it, i'll check it out. I've only been here 3 years but I live really West so it's hard to get downtown to stuff a lot with school and things. Once I find a job this summer I want to check out some places and explore downtown more!

Urban Herbivore in Kensington Market is probably my favourite vegan restaurant in the city. They have amazing sandwiches. http://www.fressenrestaurant.com/ (They're owned by Fressen, which is also amazing but a lot fancier.)

how far west, like mississauga? i lived there for 4 years and i had no trouble finding places to eat, the key is to avoid all the big chains and look for small ethnic places. there's tons of options in indian, thai, japanese, chinese etc. the trick is just finding places where the staff know enough english to be able to explain your needs and make substitutions etc. and any place where the owners are muslim or buddhist is usually more likely to understand what vegetarian and vegan mean.

the only totally vegan restuarant i ate at my whole 4 years there was in oakville, a little place called i think Ruby's, the place is so rundown, it was practically empty, the menu was small, the prices too high, but the owner herself serves you and is a super nice lady. because it was our first visit (i have a feeling she remembers all of her customers) we got free soup which was quite possibly the best carrot soup i have ever had, ever. i forget what i ordered, it wasn't bad but not spectacular, and carrot cake for dessert was disappointing, it was a very small piece and seemed a little stale, and was sorta bland. i think it's worth going there at least once just for the service and the soup though lol. if it's still there
