.....does anyone else get annoyed when people say things like "our house" pronounced as "are house"? I rarely hear the word "our" correctly spoken and..... well, it annoys me.

I pronounce it "are" all the time. And then there's "warsh" for "wash", "crick" for "creek", and all other sorts. Ah, the joy of having an Iowan accent. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/grin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":D">

I typically say "our" like "are" instead of "hour". It's not like language rules are fixed and immovable. Language is a fluid, ever-changing entity, and don't let those darn prescriptive grammaticians tell you any different! Let language change, or it will die. Latin--case in point.

Ahhh, my favorite... Crick. That's the best. Especially when someone does it naturally, not making fun of it. So hilarious! Like, "It's not a crick, dude. Look at the way it's spelled. By the rules of the english language 'ee' is pronounced E, like the letter, not a short e!" I love accents. Facinating!

I am not, BeardedLady! Changing language an idea impressed upon me over and over in my Spanish Linguistics class last semester. The wording is mine, so maybe I am a poet, and I've fooled even myself.

Accents are fun! Nothing like that would ever bother me. I have a bad accent and if I'm not careful it will come spilling out. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/grin.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":D"> My hub gets really annoyed when people over use the word actually. Ever since he pointed it out I have noticed it but it doesn't get my upset like it does him. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="">

We are all closet poets. We just have to learn how to arrange the words.... Accents and changing semantics are part of the beauty of poetry.

You are not. If it bugs you. It bugs you. And to think I was going to invite you to Oklahoma. Well, come on over anyway.

My husband (raised in Alabama) pronounces own and on the same. They both come out as own. "It is own the table"<br><br>
He says ruined as "rurned" but what really bugged me, was that he says nuclear just like Bush! And he was a science major!!<br><br>
(Yet, after he heard Bush say it, he stopped saying nookular.<br><br>
Finally!<br><br>
Yet I say often like "offen and he says "often" The kids hate it when he says "ya'll" but that doesn't bug me. And he won't allow our kids to say "ain't" ha ha.

It doesn't bother me when people pronounce it "are," but when someone writes "are" when they really mean "our"--wow, that makes me postal.<br><br><br><br>
Yes, I am a freaky grammatician. I understand and accept and even relish the idea of language (and thus, grammar) changing (anyone up for discussing the great vowel shift? ), however I am really bothered by silly mistakes like writing the incorrect homonym, improper use of commas, etc. etc. It's scary. I should probably seek help.

Pronounciations don't bother me too often. It's spelling and grammar when written! Like saying "could of gone to the store" rather than "could've gone to the store" ... essentially they're pronounced the same way, but people should recognise the difference! Could of is incorrect and makes no sense when you think it through... could've is a contraction of "could have" and is how you're supposed to write it!<br><br><br><br>
Gah!<br><br><br><br>
Ok, I'm done <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">
