My bf and I were driving down the local highway a few days ago in a pretty populated area...where there are many kinds of people. It is a fairly diverse area. We went past this Storage place which puts up a different quote for the day. Well, the quote that day was "If God didn't want us to eat animals, why did he make them out of meat?"<br><br><br><br>
I was quite offended because 1) It is a public establishment posting religious-based quotes 2) it is anti-veg propaghanda, 3) it is offensive to vegetarians. Many different kinds of people live in the area, therefore more people than just me were probably offended.<br><br><br><br>
I know we have freedoms of speech and press....but the sign is as big as a billboard. Come on...

1. By "storage place," do you mean a privately-run business that happens to serve the general public? If so, they can espouse nearly whatever views they want with their resources on their property. It would be different if it were on a city hall bulletin board, when city council may not have approved it as a message from them.<br><br>
2. How do you know what they intended with it? Do they often put up quotes that are controversial or satirical?<br><br>
3. Only to vegetarians who are too stuck on themselves to laugh when someone else tries to tell a joke.

Maybe it would be better if the joke wasn't so nonsensical.<br><br><br><br>
It defies logic in ways that a 5 year old should understand.<br><br>
It makes me wonder, a) who perceived themselves so witty to come up with this attempt at satirical defense for eating animal flesh, and b) how oblivious and ignorant someone has to be to actually use this one-liner as a defense for flesh consumption.

It makes me wonder, a) who perceived themselves so witty to come up with this attempt at satirical defense for eating animal flesh, b) who in their right mind would laugh at the joke <i>as something witty</i>, and c) how oblivious and ignorant someone has to be to actually use this one-liner as a defense for flesh consumption.</div>

This coming from the person who can't take any jokes about his faith unless there's a Christian standing right there answering any possible theological questions a listener might have... Where's your facepalm thingy? I want to use it.

nice thinly veiled personal attack via sarcasm. /reported<br><br><br><br>
it's also a logical fallacy to the discussion on this joke.

I wouldn't go so far as "offensive and appalling." I probably would have rolled my eyes and then forgotten all about it.

I'm kind of in line with Skylark on this.<br><br><br><br>
1. Nah. Besides the government/private issue, this is not really a religious statement; it's a joke using "God" to make the joke work, not to promote a particular religion.<br><br><br><br>
2. Propaganda? That doesn't seem an apt description. It pokes fun at vegetarians, but I can't see it as an kind of concerted attempt to distort the public perception of facts to promote an agenda.<br><br><br><br>
3. Yes, I can see how it would be. But mostly just because it makes light of something most vegetarians give a lot of careful thought to. I don't think it's offensive in the same way that slurs of epithets are, for example.<br><br><br><br>
The person who put it up might have an issue with vegetarianism (or some particular vegetarian), or might just be oblivious to the concerns of vegetarians and thought it was amusing.<br><br><br><br>
Even as a vegetarian, I find this quip mildly amusing (I've heard it before). Its humor rests on a "cart before the horse" kind of thing - "meat" being a human concept whose meaning depends on the practice of eating animal flesh. Playing games with our categories can sometimes be thought-provoking.

People are made out of "meat", too, should we also eat people according to this "logic"? I mean, when you eat meat, you're eating muscle & tissue, same thing that people are made of. It's just not funny or witty, even if you are a meat eater. It's just stupid.

Yeah. I don't think I'm offended and appalled, though it is a pretty annoying quip and incredibly illogical and ignorant.<br><br><br><br>
I don't see the humor in it, personally, but let idiots be idiots and move on. Dwelling on the idiocy of the world will only stress you out and drive you crazy.

Is this on par with the quality of the other quotes this storage place puts up?</div>
</div>
<br><br><br>
It doesn't really seem that way since she was so shocked by it.<br><br><br><br>
Maybe they normally put up quotes that are relatively intelligent.<br><br><br><br>
I have seen a church around here that puts up signs that say crap like, "Find Jesus or Go to Hell." I mean, some people are just ridiculous.

Maybe the OP could see if they're violating any zoning ordinances with the giant sign and get the city to make them take it down. : )

it's sounds like something homer simpson would say. it's funny because it is so dumb--and the dumbness of it might just make a brighter person spend a couple minutes dwelling on vegetarianism that they would not otherwise.

it's an old joke. I might have been mildly annoyed by it when I first heard it years ago, now I simply laugh because it highlights the ignorance of the speaker...

I'm so annoyed by that joke that I probably wouldn't do business with them. But that's mostly because it's one of those jokes that, when someone hears it for the first time, they think it's incredibly witty and have to tell everyone.

If i'm not mistaken that quote was used on the Simpsons by Homer.

I have noticed that this comment is brought up, without fail, when <i>any</i> animal rights issue is being discussed by a hostile TV or radio call-in show host.<br><br><br><br>
And always, without fail, the host laughs like crazy when a caller relates this-oh-so-witty T-shirt slogan. Nowadays the quote just bores me because I have heard it so many times.

Much of these thoughts and feelings stem from the writtings of people like Francis Bacon and René Descartes.</div>
