I've been veggie for about a month now but I've been looking in shops and on-line and most of the vegetarian meals and recipes that Ive found contain nuts. I have the slight problem of being very allergic to them but from what Ive found they seam to be one of the staple things in a vegetarian diet. Can someone confirm that? I really want to stay vegetarian but if I know that its going to damage my health then I cant do it

Thanks!

You don't have to eat nuts. Avocados are a good source of fat and flaxseeds are a great souce of omega 3 essential fatty acids ( I don't know if you can have seeds?) As far as protien, beans, grains, tofu, tempeh, and green vegetables have lots of protein. You can definitely be a vegetarian without nuts.

A lot of vegetarians eat a lot of nuts. They're packed with protein, so they're considered a good substitute for meat. They're also full of fat, which is something many vegetarians don't get enough of.

But they certainly aren't the only possible sources of those things. If you're not allergic to soy, then getting plenty of protein is easy - soy beans are the basis for most "fake meat" type products. As for fat, I make a point of getting omega-3 from flax seeds primarily, and most other types of fat just come naturally from eating various other things.

I'd recommend checking out the book "Becoming Vegetarian" by Melina and Davis. Very good book, and it should provide you with plenty of ideas for how to maintain a balanced vegetarian diet, without forcing you to eat nuts.

I barely ever eat nuts. Have you looked at the recipe section on this board? There's plenty there with no nuts.
